Characterization of a sulfated fucan-specific carbohydrate-binding module: A promising tool for investigating sulfated fucans

Xuanwei Mei et al.

Summary: A novel CBM47 domain was discovered from the marine bacterium Wenyingzhuangia fucanilytica, which showed specific binding capacity to sulfated fucans with 1,3-alpha-L-fucopyranose residues. This discovery provides a promising tool for future investigations on sulfated fucans, and in situ visualization of sulfated fucan in sea cucumber body wall was successfully implemented using a fluorescent probe constructed from WfCBM47 fused with green fluorescent protein.

C-Terminal Bacterial Immunoglobulin-like Domain of κ-Carrageenase Serves as a Multifunctional Module to Promote κ-Carrageenan Hydrolysis

Mengdan Xing et al.

Summary: In this study, a C-terminal bacterial immunoglobulin-like domain (Big_2) was identified in kappa-carrageenase and found to be essential for maintaining the activity and thermostability of the enzyme. The noncatalytic Big_2 domain was also shown to contribute to the processivity of the enzyme and could enhance hydrolysis of kappa-carrageenan independently. Additionally, sequence analysis revealed the conservation of Big_2 domains in bacterial kappa-carrageenases, suggesting their universal noncatalytic functions.

Kappa-carrageenan enhances the gelation and structural changes of egg yolk via electrostatic interactions with yolk protein

Min Huang et al.

Summary: The study found that the addition of x-carrageenan had an impact on the gelation properties of egg yolk, mainly through electrostatic interactions. The addition of x-C increased the average area of holes formed by yolk gelation and decreased the gelling points. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the interactions between x-C and proteins.
