Differences in code terminology and frequency of findings in meat inspection of finishing pigs in seven European countries

Lis Alban et al.

Summary: The overall objectives of meat inspection are to ensure food safety, animal welfare, and animal health. In the European Union, there is a need for a modernised meat inspection system to address these objectives more effectively and efficiently. However, differences in national systems pose challenges for harmonisation and comparison of data.

A European survey on post-mortem inspection of finishing pigs: Total condemnation criteria to declare meat unfit for human consumption

Madalena Vieira-Pinto et al.

Summary: Meat inspection is important for verifying legal requirements and protecting human and animal health and welfare. A survey of European countries found significant variation in the criteria used to determine total condemnation in post-mortem inspections of finishing pigs. The main reason for this variation was the use of different indicators to define generalized conditions related to specific inspection findings. Harmonization and comparative analysis would benefit from developing a standardized approach to identifying and judging generalized conditions.

Modernising meat inspection of pigs-A review of the Danish process from 2006-2020

Lis Alban et al.

Summary: This paper summarises the process undertaken in Denmark for changing meat inspection practices for finishing pigs, with a stepwise approach of national risk assessments and epidemiological investigations. The study concluded that visual-only inspection could safely replace traditional methods with some limitations. Collaborative work among academia, industry, and veterinary authorities was essential in this process.

Assessing the value of bacteriological examination as a diagnostic tool in relation to meat inspection in cattle

Elvetia Kogka et al.

Summary: The study in a Danish cattle abattoir evaluated the value of using an official bacteriological examination (BU) protocol as a diagnostic tool for confirming the stage of lesions in slaughtered animals. The presence of bacteria was found to have strong associations between organs, with Trueperella pyogenes being the most frequently isolated bacterium. Bacterial growth was more commonly found in samples from condemned animals, particularly in the spleen, liver, and lung.

Challenges and opportunities in the implementation of new meat inspection systems in Europe

Boris Antunovic et al.

Summary: European countries are in the process of modernizing their meat inspection systems to improve livestock health and meat safety. The implementation of new risk-based meat inspection systems is still ongoing and facing obstacles such as existing trade agreements, implementation costs, inadequate food chain information, and resistance from meat inspectors.

Agricultural Holdings and Slaughterhouses' Impact on Patterns of Pathological Findings Observed during Post-Mortem Meat Inspection

Johannes Klinger et al.

Summary: The pig sector is economically important in the EU, with official veterinarians conducting meat inspections at slaughter to ensure only healthy animals enter the food chain. Data from meat inspections provide valuable information about herd health for farmers, veterinarians, and authorities. Factors such as agricultural holdings, slaughterhouses, and time periods influence the prevalence of post-mortem findings, indicating a need for more detailed recording of pathologies affecting respiratory and liver health to improve herd management.

Drivers, opportunities, and challenges of the European risk-based meat safety assurance system

Bojan Blagojevic et al.

Summary: The traditional meat safety system has played a significant role in public health protection, but it has limitations in controlling the most important meat-borne hazards. The European Food Safety Authority has proposed a new, risk-based meat safety assurance system which aims to combine preventive and control measures to improve meat safety. The modernization process has begun, with a focus on targeted and risk-based inspection along the supply chain and the use of new technologies for a cost-effective and feasible approach.
