A global agenda for advancing freshwater biodiversity research

Alain Maasri et al.

Summary: Global freshwater biodiversity is declining dramatically, with investments in research and conservation lagging behind terrestrial and marine realms. Through a global consultation, 15 pressing priority needs have been identified to support informed stewardship of freshwater biodiversity. The proposed agenda aims to advance freshwater biodiversity research globally for its sustainable management and conservation.

Scientists' warning to humanity on the freshwater biodiversity crisis

James S. Albert et al.

Summary: Freshwater ecosystems play a crucial role in supporting biodiversity, ecosystem productivity, and human health and welfare. However, human impacts are leading to rapid declines in freshwater biodiversity and the loss of critical natural resources and services, with the degradation occurring more quickly than in terrestrial ecosystems. To address these challenges, urgent policy actions are needed to promote clean water, conserve watershed services, and restore freshwater ecosystems.

Safeguarding freshwater life beyond 2020: Recommendations for the new global biodiversity framework from the European experience

Charles B. van Rees et al.

Summary: Plans are underway for the next decade of action on biodiversity, with a focus on freshwater biodiversity. Despite being disproportionately threatened, freshwater biodiversity has not received enough attention in policies and strategies. It is crucial for future actions to prioritize the unique ecology and threats facing freshwater ecosystems, and to incorporate recommendations based on past experiences and recent literature.

How to Assess the Ecological Status of Highly Humic Lakes? Development of a New Method Based on Benthic Invertebrates

Summary: The study found that altered water level is the main threat to highly humic lake habitats, and suggests using a multimetric index to assess their ecological quality.
