First In-Human Results of Computed Tomography Angiography for Coronary Stent Assessment With a Spectral Photon Counting Computed Tomography

Sara Boccalini et al.

Summary: This study compared the image quality of in vivo coronary stents between an energy integrating detectors dual-layer computed tomography (EID-DLCT) and a clinical prototype of spectral photon counting computed tomography (SPCCT). The results showed that SPCCT demonstrated improved objective and subjective image quality compared to EID-DLCT, even with a reduced radiation dose.

Photon-Counting Detector CT-Based Vascular Calcium Removal Algorithm Assessment Using a Cardiac Motion Phantom

Thomas Allmendinger et al.

Summary: This study assessed the performance of a novel calcium-removal image reconstruction algorithm called PureLumen, based on spectral CT data of a first-generation dual-source photon-counting detector computed tomography (PCD-CT) system. The results showed that PureLumen effectively reduced blooming artifacts caused by heavily calcified plaques and improved image interpretability.

High-Pitch Photon-Counting Detector Computed Tomography Angiography of the Aorta Intraindividual Comparison to Energy-Integrating Detector Computed Tomography at Equal Radiation Dose

Andre Euler et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the objective and subjective image quality of high-pitch PCD-CT and conventional EID-CT of the aorta at the same radiation dose. The results showed that high-pitch PCD-CT with VMI at 40 and 45 keV had significantly higher CNR compared to EID-CT with ATVS at matched radiation dose. The CNR gain of PCD-CT was more pronounced in overweight patients. A trade-off between objective and subjective image quality was found with VMI at 45 to 50 keV.

Proactive Air Management in CT Power Injections: A Comprehensive Approach to Reducing Air Embolization

Michael C. McDermott et al.

Summary: This study compared the injected air volumes using different air management approaches, demonstrating that the proactive approach significantly reduced the amount of injected air. The proactive approach has the potential to decrease the risk of venous air embolism during contrast-enhanced CT procedures.

Photon-Counting Multienergy Computed Tomography With Spectrally Optimized Contrast Media for Plaque Removal and Stenosis Assessment

Thomas Sartoretti et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the combination of investigational contrast media with spectrally optimized energy-thresholding of photon-counting detector computed tomography for calcium subtraction and stenosis assessment in a coronary artery stenosis phantom. Results showed that tungsten and hafnium as contrast media yielded superior image noise properties, improved vessel lumen visualization, and higher subjective image quality compared to the reference standard iodine.

Photon-Counting Computed Tomography for Coronary Stent Imaging In Vitro Evaluation of 28 Coronary Stents

Bernhard Petritsch et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the in-stent lumen visibility and quantitative image characteristics of different coronary stents using a novel PCD CT system compared to a conventional EID CT scanner. The results showed that the PCD system provided superior in-stent lumen visibility and image characteristics compared to the EID system, demonstrating its potential for improving imaging quality in coronary interventions.

Computed Tomography Angiography of the Aorta-Optimization of Automatic Tube Voltage Selection Settings to Reduce Radiation Dose or Contrast Medium in a Prospective Randomized Trial

Andre Euler et al.

Summary: This study found that in thoracoabdominal CTA, adjusting the slider settings of an ATVS system can optimize either radiation dose or contrast medium without compromising image quality. This optimization could be extended to consider clinical risk factors of individual patients, such as kidney function, in future ATVS algorithms.
