Heat transfer augmentation of flat plate solar collector through finite element-based parametric study

Poonam Rani et al.

Summary: The introduction of fins and baffles on the absorber plate in a flat plate solar collector can improve the thermal performance, although it may cause a pumping power penalty. This study investigated the incorporation of hollow semicircular loop fins and rectangular baffles to enhance the overall performance of the collector. The continuous staggered arrangement of semicircular loops was found to be more effective. The finned collector exhibited higher Nusselt number, thermal efficiency, and collector outlet air temperature.

Energetic and exergetic efficiency analysis of a v-corrugated solar air heater integrated with twisted tape inserts

Ammar A. Farhan et al.

Summary: This study provides an analytical and numerical investigation of the energy and exergy analysis of a VCSAH integrated with TTI, revealing that the thermo-hydraulic efficiency initially rises to a peak value at a specific Reynolds number as the twisted tape ratio decreases. The optimal number of channels for maximum thermohydraulic efficiency is found to be 5 when TTI is implemented. The thermal efficiency and thermohydraulic efficiency are directly proportional to the number of channels implemented in the VCSAH-TTI system.

Thermo-hydraulic performance of a solar air heater with staggered C-shape finned absorber plate

A. Saravanan et al.

Summary: The experimental investigation focused on the thermo-hydraulic performance of a solar air heater with staggered multiple C-shape perforated and non-perforated finned absorber plate. Results indicated that the perforated finned absorber plate outperformed the smooth plate absorber plate, especially with relative pitch to gap ratio 3.8 and relative height ratio 0.6.

Constructal design of different ribs for thermo-fluid performance enhancement of a solar air heater (SAH)

Ashok K. Barik et al.

Summary: In this study, the constructal theory was utilized to develop six new types of ribs for a solar air heater, and their performance was numerically investigated using computational fluid dynamics. It was found that the T-rib showed the highest Nusselt number and lowest friction factor among all considered ribs, leading to enhanced heat transfer efficiency in the solar air heater.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the thermo-hydraulic characteristics of a solar air heater with quarter-circular ribs on the absorber plate. Three different rib arrangements are compared, with varying flow and roughness parameters. The impact of relative roughness pitch and Reynolds number on the optimized rib geometry and thermal enhancement ratio is analyzed, resulting in proposed correlations for Nusselt number and friction factor through non-linear regression analysis.

Performance assessment of flat-plate solar collector with internal fins and porous media through an integrated approach of CFD and experimentation

Rohan Kansara et al.

Summary: Linear Fresnel Reflectors are commonly used in concentrated solar power plants, but conventional LFR plants often require specialized heat transfer fluids. This study investigates a novel flat-plate solar collector with internal longitudinal fins and porous media using atmospheric air as a working fluid. Results show that the porous media has the highest heat transfer efficiency compared to fins and other geometries, with a 16.17% improvement in air temperature rise for a collector filled with porous media compared to an empty channel.
