Upper-Limb Force-Time Characteristics Determine Serve Velocity in Competition Tennis Players

Ernest Baiget et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the associations between serve velocity (SV) and single-joint upper-limb isometric force-time curve parameters, and found moderate to very large correlations between these variables. The force-time parameters in upper-limb joints, especially in the shoulder joint, were found to largely influence SV. Developing high force in short periods of time, particularly in the shoulder joint, seems relevant for achieving high SV in tennis players.

Summary: This study revealed significant positive correlations between peak serve speed in elite adolescent tennis players and factors such as body height, strength training performance (such as IMTP), and CMJ height. Internal and external rotation strength were also found to be related to serve speed.
