Sports career-related concussion and mental health symptoms in former elite athletes

V Gouttebarge et al.

Summary: This article explores the potential relationship between sports career-related concussion and mental health symptoms in former elite athletes. Based on cross-sectional data, former professional athletes who have a history of multiple concussions are more likely to experience depression and other mental health symptoms. Longitudinal evidence is lacking, but support measures should be developed for elite athletes transitioning out of sport, especially for those with a history of concussion.
