Thermal oxidation of cross-linked PE and EPR used as insulation materials: Multi-scale correlation over a wide range of temperatures

Camille Blivet et al.

Summary: The study investigated the thermo-oxidation of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) and cross-linked ethylene propylene rubber (XLEPR) used as electrical insulators in cable systems. Characterisation of the aged materials and calculation of activation energies were conducted, showing correlations between oxidation products, crystallinity changes, gel content variations, and mechanical property reductions in both materials. Despite a diffusion-limited oxidation (DLO) effect observed in the 1 mm thick samples, the results were consistent.

Revisiting creep test on polyethylene pipe-Data analysis and deformation mechanisms

Pean-Yue Ben Jar

Summary: This paper explores the possibility of using relatively short-term creep tests to determine long-term hydrostatic strength for polyethylene pipe. The study found a trend line change in the stress versus failure time around 10 hours, and determined activation energies to examine the proposed concept. Both models suggest that additional activation energy is needed for deformation in the high-stress regime.

Crack layer model for semi-elliptical surface cracks in HDPE pipes and application in buried pipes with complicated loading conditions

Summary: The study introduces a 2D CL growth model for semi-elliptical surface cracks in buried HDPE pipes, successfully simulating the SCG kinetics. Results show that the diameter of stones contacting the pipe surface influences crack propagation behavior and significantly reduces failure time.

Fracture behavior of pre-cracked polyethylene gas pipe under foundation settlement by extended finite element method

Sixi Zha et al.

Summary: The study focused on the fracture behavior of pre-cracked PE pipes under foundation settlement. It was found that the initial crack depth has a more significant influence on ultimate bearing capacity, internal pressure helps inhibit crack propagation, and the length of the transition section also plays a significant role in crack propagation.

Stochastic Study on Discontinuous Slow Crack Growth Kinetics from an Arbitrarily Located Defect of Polyethylene Based on the Crack Layer Theory

Jung-Wook Wee et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the major failure aspect of high-density polyethylene pipes, which is the discontinuous slow crack growth (DSCG) from initial defects inside the pipe wall. A crack-layer growth model for an internal eccentric crack is developed to theoretically simulate the DSCG kinetics, accurately estimating final failure time. A stochastic study on the lifetime distribution is conducted to investigate the reliability of DSCG-dominated failure, considering uncertainties related to initial crack size. The fitting of Birnbaum-Saunders distribution function accurately describes the simulated lifetime distribution, providing equations for estimating scale and shape parameters based on initial crack distributions at various locations and stress levels.
