Strengthening CrFeCoNiMn0.75Cu0.25 high entropy alloy via laser shock peening

Wujing Fu et al.

Summary: The present work demonstrates that laser shock peening (LSP) can significantly improve the mechanical properties of CrFeCoNiMn0.75Cu0.25 high entropy alloy (HEA). LSP-treated HEA samples achieve a yield strength more than two times that of as-cast alloys, attributed to the introduction of a gradient microstructure comprising subgrains, dense dislocations, and nano-twins near the treated surface. The combination of dislocation hardening and mechanical twinning leads to excellent plasticity during tensile loading. The results also indicate the possibility of developing gradient-structured HEAs with excellent mechanical properties using LSP.

Torsional deformation-induced gradient hierarchical structure in a 304 stainless steel

Jia-long Tian et al.

Summary: After torsion deformation of cylindrical 304 stainless steel samples, a gradient structure and increased volume fraction of alpha'-martensite along the radial direction were observed. Abundant deformation twin and deformation-induced martensite were produced during torsional deformation, impacting the tensile properties of the steel. The presence of deformation and martensite increased strength but decreased ductility significantly.

Plastic accommodation during tensile deformation of gradient structure

Xiaolei Wu et al.

Summary: The plastic accommodation within the gradient structure plays a crucial role in the superior strength-ductility combination, involving both inter-layer and intra-layer stress state changes during tensile deformation. Experimental measurements show that the nanostructured layer in the gradient structure undergoes strain hardening, achieving a sustainable tensile strain comparable to that in the coarse-grained layer.

Gradient and lamellar heterostructures for superior mechanical properties

Xiaolei Wu et al.

Summary: Heterostructured materials are a novel class of materials with mechanical properties superior to their conventional counterparts. The two most studied heterostructures are grain-size gradient structure and heterolamellar structure, which produce heterogeneous deformation during tensile deformation, enhancing strength and retaining ductility through HDI stress.

Superior Strength and Ductility of 304 Austenitic Stainless Steel with Gradient Dislocations

Qingsong Pan et al.

Summary: Materials with designed gradient nanograins show exceptional mechanical properties, such as superior strength and ductility. This study demonstrates that a heterostructured 304 stainless steel with solely gradient dislocation structure (GDS) exhibits substantially improved yield strength with slightly reduced uniform elongation compared to its coarse grained counterparts. Microstructural observations reveal that multiple deformation mechanisms, including the formation of dense dislocation patterns, deformation twins and martensitic phase, contribute to the delocalized plastic deformation and superior mechanical performance of the GDS 304 stainless steel.

Hierarchical grain size and nanotwin gradient microstructure for improved mechanical properties of a non-equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy

Zibing An et al.

Summary: This study investigated a multi-mechanism approach to enhancing the mechanical properties of a CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy through non-equiatomic alloy design and processing. The alloy exhibited improved yield strength, tensile strength, and uniform elongation, as well as significantly increased toughness after rotationally accelerated shot peening treatment. The enhancement in strength was attributed to various strengthening mechanisms associated with the heterogeneous microstructure of the alloy. The occurrence of multiple deformation mechanisms contributed to achieving suitable strain hardening and ensuring steady plastic deformation for high toughness.

Strain partitioning enables excellent tensile ductility in precipitated heterogeneous high-entropy alloys with gigapascal yield strength

Feng He et al.

Summary: A Ni2CoCrFeTi0.24Al0.2 HEA was developed with a yield strength of approximately 1.3 GPa and tensile elongation of 20% through single-step heat treatment. The excellent strength-ductility combination is attributed to the grain scale heterogeneous structure with L1(2) precipitates ranging from 10 to 100 nm. Additionally, the efficient hetero-deformation induced strain hardening effect allows for the good ductility of the HEA.

Gradient cell-structured high-entropy alloy with exceptional strength and ductility

Qingsong Pan et al.

Summary: By introducing gradient nanoscaled dislocation cell structures in stable single-phase HEAs, enhanced strength can be achieved without apparent loss of ductility. The gradient structure induces the formation of high-density tiny stacking faults and twins, contributing to improved plasticity, increased strength, and work hardening.

Controllable Martensite Transformation and Strain-Controlled Fatigue Behavior of a Gradient Nanostructured Austenite Stainless Steel

Yunbo Lei et al.

Summary: A gradient nanostructured (GNS) surface layer with a controllable martensite fraction has been successfully synthesized on 316L austenitic stainless steel by controlling the temperature. Fatigue experiments showed significantly enhanced fatigue properties of GNS samples at high strain amplitudes, especially in the presence of a dual-phase surface layer. The GNS surface layer enhances strength-ductility synergy and suppresses surface fatigue defects during fatigue, while the dual-phase structure promotes martensite and stacking faults, further enhancing fatigue properties at high strain amplitudes.
