Thermo-mechanically coupled gradient-extended damage-plasticity modeling of metallic materials at finite strains

S. Felder et al.

Summary: This study presents a thermo-mechanically coupled two-surface damage plasticity theory for analyzing and predicting damage behavior in ductile materials under thermo-mechanical loading conditions. It overcomes the mesh-dependence of conventional local damage models by employing a gradient-extension approach. The model is verified and demonstrates promising potential in predicting various physical phenomena.

Summary: This study extends the analysis of a family of large deformation continuum finite elements to non-local damage and fracture, incorporating a gradient-extended damage plasticity model. Modeling of dynamic mode I crack growth in glass fiber-reinforced polymer composites: fracture energy and failure mechanism

Y. Liu et al.

Summary: The mode-I dynamic fracture energy and failure mechanisms of glass fiber-reinforced polymer composites were investigated using an embedded cell model of the single-edge-notched-tension (SENT) geometry. It was found that with increasing strain rates, the composite material exhibited increased brittleness, with limited plasticity in the fracture process zone. The crack growth was dominated by a velocity-toughness mechanism after the fracture process zone was fully developed.

A multiscale experimentally-based finite element model to predict microstructure and damage evolution in martensitic steels

Edward D. Meade et al.

Summary: This work aims to investigate plastic deformation and microstructural evolution in a martensitic steel at multiple length scales using finite-element modelling and experimental measurements. A multiscale model was developed to predict damage evolution in the necked region of a uniaxial tensile test specimen, while a crystal plasticity model was used to study microscale plastic deformation and changes in crystal orientation under large strains. The predicted crystal orientations and misorientation distribution were in good agreement with measurements, showing the effectiveness of the developed techniques in understanding plastic deformation and damage evolution in engineering materials.

Comparative study of multiscale computational strategies for materials with discrete microstructures

K. Mikes et al.

Summary: The text discusses two different modeling approaches for understanding local defects in engineering materials: fully-resolved discrete systems and homogenized continuum formulations with specific enrichments. A comparison is made in terms of theory, accuracy, and performance, demonstrating capabilities and limitations of both methods. While continuum models with embedded cohesive zones offer good performance to accuracy ratios, they might not capture unexpected complex mechanical behavior. The Quasicontinuum method, on the other hand, provides more flexibility and higher accuracy with a slightly higher computational cost.
