Youbin Chen et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates the ductile tearing behavior of a full size precracked pipe. The pipe material is characterized using smooth and notched tensile bars and precracked C(T) specimens, and a non-local GTN model is used in finite element simulations to successfully represent the early stages of crack propagation in the pipe.

Effect of incorporating Lode angle parameter into a fracture criterion in predicting ballistic impact behavior of double-layered 2024-T351 aluminum alloy plates against blunt projectiles

Xinke Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ballistic impact behavior of double-layered aluminum alloy plates and compares the predictions of two fracture criteria, one independent of Lode angle and one dependent on Lode angle. Experimental results show that using double-layered plates increases the ballistic resistance by 30%. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the Lode dependent fracture criterion predicts the ballistic limit velocities more accurately and captures the fracture patterns in more detail compared to the Lode independent criterion.

Ductile Fracture in Plane Stress

Mohammad Torki et al.

Summary: A micromechanics-based ductile fracture initiation theory has been developed and applied for high-throughput assessment of ductile failure in plane stress. The theory describes microscopic failure occurring in bands with inhomogeneous yielding, where the driving force is a combination of band-resolved normal and shear tractions. The new criterion is similar to the Mohr-Coulomb model but includes sensitivity to the third stress invariant, resulting in a finite shear ductility that cannot be explained by isotropic theory alone.

A gradient-enhanced formulation for thermoviscoplastic metals accounting for ductile damage

Joao Paulo Pascon et al.

Summary: In this work, a gradient-enhancement formulation for ductile damage analysis in thermoviscoplastic metals is extended through a nonlocal extension of the thermoviscoplastic Gurson's model. The nonlocal formulation delays the damage evolution and reduces mesh sensitivity, leading to more consistent porosity contours. The choice of the nonlocal parameter is dependent on the strain rate employed.

New ductile fracture model for fracture prediction ranging from negative to high stress triaxiality

Zengli Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, a new uncoupled ductile fracture model is established in the stress space by considering key factors affecting the initiation of ductile fracture. The proposed model is validated through experimental tests and compared with four typical ductile fracture criteria, showing good stability and accuracy in predicting fracture strain, especially in high stress triaxiality range. The asymmetry of the fracture locus and the realistic stress space are also discussed at the end.

Experimental and numerical methodology to characterize 5083-aluminium behavior considering non-associated plasticity model coupled with isotropic ductile damage

Abir Bouhamed et al.

Summary: This study developed an elastoplastic-damage model fully coupled with the constitutive equations of non-associated plasticity, using two independent quadratic functions to describe the anisotropic behavior of 5083-aluminium alloy. The elastoplastic behavior of 5083-aluminium alloy was determined through uniaxial tensile tests, and experimental-numerical confrontation proved the reliability of the current formulation in describing the behavior of 5083-aluminium alloy with good accuracy. Additionally, a novel numerical optimization procedure was used to identify Lemaitre damage parameters, offering a compromise between accuracy and computational time.

Summary: The ductile fracture behavior of anisotropic materials was studied using the uncoupled ductile fracture criterion for aluminum alloys 6016-AC200. The model considers void nucleation, growth, and evolution of void coalescence, with anisotropic yield function and non-associated flow rule applied for accuracy. Experimental tests and simulations confirmed the efficacy of the proposed fracture criterion for predicting onset of ductile fracture in sheet metal forming.

A thermodynamically nonlocal damage model using a surface-residual-based nonlocal stress

Liyang Huang et al.

Summary: In this research, a surface-residual-based nonlocal stress was introduced into nonlocal damage theory to describe long-range actions among microstructures. A thermodynamically consistent nonlocal integral damage model was established to simulate strain localization behavior for elastic-brittle damage problems. The characteristic length was found to be comparable to the size of the strain localization zone based on simulations of different internal characteristic lengths for strain localization behaviors.
