Alloys for application at ultra-high temperatures: Nb-silicide in situ composites Challenges, breakthroughs and opportunities

P. Tsakiropoulos

Summary: This paper compares Nb-silicide based alloys with refractory-complex-concentrated-alloys (RCCAs) in terms of density, oxidation, and mechanical properties, highlighting the importance of alloying to suppress oxidation and scale spallation, and to meet fracture toughness goals. The discussion also emphasizes the role of microstructure type, Ti/Si, Ti/Hf, Nb/(Ti + Hf) ratios, and alloying additions in creep behavior, and describes the alloying behavior using parameters such as delta, Delta chi, VEC, Delta Hmix, Delta Smix, and omega. The study shows that RCCAs with Nb and other RM additions can be represented together with Nb-silicide based alloys in the same maps of the aforementioned parameters, indicating similarities in their alloying behavior.

Room-temperature deformation of single crystals of transition-metal disilicides (TMSi2) with the C11b (TM = Mo) and C40 (TM = V, Cr, Nb and Ta) structures investigated by micropillar compression

Kyosuke Kishida et al.

Summary: This study investigated the room-temperature deformation behavior of single crystals of transition-metal disilicides through micropillar compression, revealing that plastic flow is observed by the operation of the equivalent slip at room temperature for all these TM disilicides. The critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) value exhibits the 'smaller is stronger' behavior and transmission electron microscopy shows that the equivalent slip at room temperature occurs by a conventional shear mechanism for all TM disilicides.

Direct observation of zonal dislocation in complex materials by atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy

Kyosuke Kishida et al.

Summary: Direct observation using Z-contrast atomic-resolution microscopy confirms the existence of zonal dislocation in the sigma phase FeCr. Understanding the dislocation core structure will improve the understanding of deformation mechanisms in complex crystal structures and provide methods to enhance the brittleness of these materials.

Plastic deformation of single crystals of the δ1p and δ1k intermetallic compounds in the Fe-Zn system by micropillar compression

Yukichika Hashizume et al.

Summary: The plastic deformation behavior of single crystals of delta(1p) and delta(1k) phase compounds in the Fe-Zn system, which are major constituent phases in galvannealed (GA) steels, was investigated by micropillar compression tests. Different slip systems were observed in the delta(1p) and delta(1k) phase compounds, with strain bursts and instantaneous 'slip plane failure' occurring. The critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) for basal and prism slip showed inverse power-law scaling against specimen size.

The Creep and Oxidation Behaviour of Pesting-Resistant (Mo,Ti)5Si3-Containing Eutectic-Eutectoid Mo-Si-Ti Alloys

Susanne Obert et al.

Summary: In this study, lightweight Ti-rich Mo-Si-Ti alloys with fine-scaled eutectic-eutectoid microstructures were developed, showing superior oxidation and creep resistance. The presence of (Mo,Ti)5Si-3 in the alloys contributed to their resistance to both oxidation and creep. The creep resistance of these alloys is competitive and surpasses that of other Mo-Si-Ti alloys and the commercially used nickel-based single crystal alloy CMSX-4.
