Targeting Wnt/β-catenin by anthelmintic drug niclosamide overcomes paclitaxel resistance in esophageal cancer

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: Esophageal cancer is a highly aggressive malignancy with high rates of recurrence. Niclosamide, an anthelmintic drug, shows potential as a sensitizing agent to overcome chemoresistance in esophageal cancer, particularly in combination with paclitaxel. Mechanistically, niclosamide inhibits Wnt/beta-catenin signaling and shows efficacy in inhibiting proliferation and inducing apoptosis in paclitaxel-resistant esophageal cancer cells.

LncRNA XIST Promotes Migration and Invasion of Papillary Thyroid Cancer Cell by Modulating MiR-101-3p/CLDN1 Axis

Yong-Liang Du et al.

Summary: In papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), the long non-coding RNA XIST is upregulated and promotes migration and invasion of PTC cells by directly regulating the miR-101-3p/CLDN1 axis. This study provides a novel mechanistic insight into the role of XIST in PTC metastasis.

Biological functions of chromobox (CBX) proteins in stem cell self-renewal, lineage-commitment, cancer and development

Andre J. van Wijnen et al.

Summary: Epigenetic regulatory proteins control processes in mammalian development, cancer, aging, and tissue repair by regulating stem cell renewal, differentiation, and senescence in both skeletal and non-skeletal tissues. These proteins are involved in the formation of inaccessible heterochromatin and the suppression of cell and tissue-specific biomarkers during development. Maintenance and formation of heterochromatin rely on histone modifications recognized by specific epigenetic regulators.

MiR-874 Inhibits Cell Proliferation, Migration, and Invasion of Glioma Cells and Correlates with Prognosis of Glioma Patients

Yongjuan Li et al.

Summary: Previous studies have shown abnormal expression of miR-874 in various tumors, but its role in glioma was unknown. This study found that miR-874 was significantly downregulated in glioma tissues and cell lines, and its decreased expression was associated with tumor size, KPS, and WHO grade. Functional assays revealed that upregulation of miR-874 inhibited proliferation, migration, and invasion of glioma cells in vitro, suggesting its potential as a prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target for glioma.

Summary: miR-30b, a 21-23 nucleotide long non-coding RNA, has been shown to inhibit cell proliferation, migration, invasion and epithelial-mesenchymal transformation in various types of cancer, as well as play essential roles in cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. It is considered a potential candidate for clinical development as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker, therapeutic agent and drug target, although further research is needed to fully understand its role in health and disease.

Summary: Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are commonly used drugs for relieving acute and chronic inflammatory diseases, and they have shown potential in enhancing the efficacy of chemotherapy in cancer treatment. However, they may also contribute to drug resistance in cancer cells and have various antitumor mechanisms unrelated to autophagy. The link between these mechanisms, clinical efficacy, and pharmacological safety remains not fully understood.
