Obesity risk is associated with altered cerebral glucose metabolism and decreased μ-opioid and CB1 receptor availability

Tatu Kantonen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between brain insulin signaling, mu-opioid receptors (MORs), and cannabinoid CB1 receptors with the risk of developing obesity. The results showed that high obesity risk was associated with globally increased insulin-stimulated brain glucose uptake, and familial obesity risk factors were related to decreased availability of MORs and CB1Rs. This suggests that hereditary mechanisms promoting obesity may be mediated partly via insulin, opioid, and endocannabinoid messaging systems in the brain.

Evaluation of Adiposity and Cognitive Function in Adults

Sonia S. Anand et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association of adiposity on vascular brain injury and cognitive scores. The results showed that generalized and visceral adiposity were associated with reduced cognitive scores, even after adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors, educational level, and vascular brain injury.

Insulin Resistance Is Associated With Enhanced Brain Glucose Uptake During Euglycemic Hyperinsulinemia: A Large-Scale PET Cohort

Eleni Rebelos et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that insulin sensitivity was negatively associated with brain glucose uptake (BGU) during euglycemic hyperinsulinemia, indicating increased BGU in insulin-resistant individuals. Age was negatively related to BGU, while steady-state insulin levels, C-reactive protein and free fatty acid levels, sex, and HbA(1c) were not associated with BGU.

Summary: This study found that the brain shows adaptive responses following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery, helping to lower blood sugar levels and improve cognitive function and neural network activity.

Bariatric surgery restores visual cortical plasticity in nondiabetic subjects with obesity

Giuseppe Daniele et al.

Summary: This study found that bariatric surgery (RYGB) has a significant impact on improving visual neural plasticity (NP) in individuals with obesity, possibly mediated by improved insulin sensitivity, increased GLP-1 levels, and reduced leptin levels.

Memory and Executive Function in Adolescent and Young Adult Females with Moderate to Severe Obesity Before and After Weight Loss Surgery

Charumathi Baskaran et al.

Summary: Research suggests that adolescent females with moderate to severe obesity demonstrate poorer performance in verbal memory and executive function compared to non-obese peers. Furthermore, despite significant weight loss following bariatric surgery, there is no observed improvement in cognitive abilities over a 12-month period. Further studies are needed to fully evaluate the impact of bariatric surgery on cognitive function.
