Associations of neurotransmitters and the gut microbiome with emotional distress in mixed type of irritable bowel syndrome

Zahra A. Barandouzi et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests a comorbidity between emotional distress and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) through the gut-brain axis. This study aimed to investigate the associations among neurotransmitter levels and gut microbiome profiles in individuals with IBS and emotional distress. The results showed significant differences in emotional distress and microbiome profiles between the IBS and healthy control groups, with lower levels of neurotransmitters observed in the IBS group. Additionally, correlations were found between neurotransmitter levels and specific microbial taxa.
