Microbial pathogens induce neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease mice: protection by microglial regulation

Tal Ganz et al.

Summary: This study suggests that systemic microbial pathogens may accelerate neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease and that microglia play a central role in this process. The research also found that modulating microglial activation in an infectious environment can protect the brain from neurodegeneration.

Cerebrospinal fluid of progressive multiple sclerosis patients reduces differentiation and immune functions of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells

Omri Zveik et al.

Summary: Oligodendrocyte progenitor cells play a role in both remyelination and immune response in the central nervous system. CSF from patients with progressive MS impairs differentiation of OPCs and reduces immune functions.

Volumetric Brain Loss Correlates With a Relapsing MOGAD Disease Course

Ariel Rechtman et al.

Summary: This study compared brain volumetric changes in patients with MOGAD and found differences in brain volume between MOGAD patients and healthy controls, as well as between patients with different disease phenotypes. Decreased gray matter volume, especially in the cerebrum and hippocampus, during the first year of diagnosis was associated with a relapsing disease course.

Connecting Neuroinflammation and Neurodegeneration in Multiple Sclerosis: Are Oligodendrocyte Precursor Cells a Nexus of Disease?

Morgan W. Psenicka et al.

Summary: Neurodegenerative diseases often involve inflammation, and multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex interplay between inflammation and neurodegeneration. Oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) play an active role in promoting neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration in MS, in addition to being a target of autoimmune pathology.

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders

Shabeer Paul et al.

Summary: Over the past two decades, the disease concept of NMOSD has significantly changed with the detection of MOG antibody and the understanding of immune astrocytopathy. The revised diagnostic criteria have widened the clinical spectrum of NMOSD, allowing for earlier diagnosis and prompt initiation of effective immunosuppression for better long-term outcomes. Challenges still remain in treating seronegative NMOSD due to limited treatment options.
