Metabolic subtypes of patients with NAFLD exhibit distinctive cardiovascular risk profiles

Ibon Martinez-Arranz et al.

Summary: This study identified three metabolic subtypes of NAFLD, which are associated with cardiovascular disease and genetic risk factors. Despite similar rates of NASH and fibrosis among the subtypes, differences were observed in liver enzymes and lipid metabolism. Additionally, subtype A showed a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and genetic markers for NAFLD.

The relation between VLDL-cholesterol and risk of cardiovascular events in patients with manifest cardiovascular disease

Britt E. Heidemann et al.

Summary: In patients with clinically manifest cardiovascular disease, plasma VLDL-C is associated with an increased risk for major adverse limb events (MALE), but not for recurrent major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and all-cause mortality, independent of established risk factors including LDL-C and lipid-lowering medication.

Human apolipoprotein A-II reduces atherosclerosis in knock-in rabbits

Tomonari Koike et al.

Summary: Using a novel rabbit model, the study revealed the specific roles of apoAII in lipoprotein metabolism and atherosclerosis. Rabbits with human apoAII gene insertion showed lower plasma triglycerides, higher HDL cholesterol, resistance to cholesterol-rich diet, and reduced aortic atherosclerosis compared to wild-type rabbits. These findings suggest that apoAII may serve as a potential target for the treatment of atherosclerosis.

Diet and exercise reduce pre-existing NASH and fibrosis and have additional beneficial effects on the vasculature, adipose tissue and skeletal muscle via organ-crosstalk

Anita M. van den Hoek et al.

Summary: Exercise, dietary change, and their combination can reverse established NASH/fibrosis in obese Ldlr-/-.Leiden mice, with beneficial effects on atherosclerosis, WAT inflammation, and muscle function. Exercise and dietary change affect distinct pathways related to steatosis and lipid metabolism, acting complementarily when combined, resulting in an additive effect on important endpoints including NASH and atherosclerosis. For inflammation, exercise and diet share several pathways, leading to a similar net effect when interventions are combined.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and risk of fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular events: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis

Alessandro Mantovani et al.

Summary: Studies have shown a significant association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence. The risk of fatal or non-fatal CVD events is moderately increased with NAFLD, and this risk escalates with the severity of NAFLD, particularly with higher fibrosis stages. These findings suggest that NAFLD may be an independent risk factor for CVD morbidity and mortality.
