Impact of α-Linolenic Acid, the Vegetable ω-3 Fatty Acid, on Cardiovascular Disease and Cognition

Aleix Sala-Vila et al.

Summary: This narrative review updates the evidence on the relationship between dietary alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cognition. There is increasing evidence for the cardiovascular benefits of ALA, but its effects on metabolic syndrome and obesity are inconclusive. Research on the role of ALA in cognition is in the early stages.

Global, regional, and national burden of ischaemic heart disease and its attributable risk factors, 1990-2017: results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

Haijiang Dai et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the burden and risk factors for ischaemic heart disease (IHD) in 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2017. The results showed that IHD remains a major public health challenge worldwide, with variations in burden and temporal trends across different geographical locations. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar, smoking, and obesity were identified as the main risk factors for IHD deaths.

Effect of icosapent ethyl on progression of coronary atherosclerosis in patients with elevated triglycerides on statin therapy: a prospective, placebo-controlled randomized trial (EVAPORATE): interim results

Matthew J. Budoff et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the effects of IPE as an adjunct to statin therapy on atherosclerotic plaque characteristics in high-risk cardiovascular patients with persistently high triglyceride levels. The interim analysis at 9 months showed that while there was no significant change in low attenuation plaque, there was a slowing of total non-calcified plaque, total plaque, fibrous plaque, and calcified plaque in the IPE group compared to placebo.

2021 Dietary Guidance to Improve Cardiovascular Health: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association

Alice H. Lichtenstein et al.

Summary: Poor diet quality is closely linked to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and this scientific statement underscores the importance of healthy dietary patterns. Evidence-based dietary guidance includes principles such as energy balance, consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables, and choosing healthy sources of protein. Challenges to adhering to heart-healthy dietary patterns include targeted marketing of unhealthy foods and structural racism.

Spending on Cardiovascular Disease and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in the United States: 1996 to 2016

Maxwell Birger et al.

Summary: US adult cardiovascular spending increased from $212 billion in 1996 to $320 billion in 2016, mainly driven by increased spending on treatment of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and atrial fibrillation/flutter. The increase was primarily associated with higher service price and intensity, while changes in disease prevalence contributed to a reduction in spending over the same period.

Essential Fatty Acids and Their Metabolites in the Pathobiology of Inflammation and Its Resolution

Undurti N. Das

Summary: Arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism plays a critical role in the initiation and resolution of inflammation. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and lipoxin A4 (LXA4) interact in a regulatory manner during inflammation, aiding in inflammation resolution and tissue regeneration.
