Photonic Label-Free Biosensors for Fast and Multiplex Detection of Swine Viral Diseases

Summary: In this paper, the development of photonic integrated circuit (PIC) biosensors for label-free detection of swine viruses is presented. The biosensors are based on evanescent wave technology and Resonant Rings (RRs) fabricated in silicon nitride. Antibodies are used as molecular recognition elements (MREs) to capture viral antigens. The results show that the biosensors have high sensitivity and specificity for detecting the targeted viruses.

Summary: The study validated a novel Point of Care (POC) system utilizing Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) and microfluidics to detect swine viral pathogens, with Porcine Parvovirus (PPV) and Porcine Circovirus 2 (PCV-2) as proofs of concept. The sensitivity and specificity of the device for both viruses were calculated, indicating that PICs can be exploited for the detection of swine viral diseases and the device can be directly deployed on farms as a POC diagnostics tool.

The complexity of viral genome and its strong ability to regulate host immune response make vaccine development challenging.
