Maternal light environment interacts with genotype in regulating seed photodormancy in tobacco

Shuai Dong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of maternal light environment, genotypes, and their interactions on seed photodormancy in tobacco. The results revealed that different varieties of tobacco seeds exhibited different levels of photodormancy and responsiveness to light. Transcriptome analysis demonstrated that genes involved in light-activated plant hormone signals showed opposite expression patterns in strong-photodormant and shallow-photodormant seeds under light and dark conditions. Furthermore, the overexpression of NtPHYB1K326, a gene related to the light-activated plant hormone signals pathway, increased seed germination in the dark. Interestingly, the light environment experienced by the maternal plants also influenced seed germination in the dark. These findings suggest that seed photodormancy is a heritable trait influenced by both genotypes and the light environment.

Molecular mechanisms of seed dormancy release by gas plasma-activated water technology

Giles Grainge et al.

Summary: Developing innovative agri-technologies is crucial for sustainable food production. This study reveals the molecular mechanisms by which non-thermal atmospheric gas plasma-activated water triggers seed dormancy release and promotes germination. By mimicking multiple environmental signals, gas plasma technologies enhance seed germination and growth, contributing to the sustainable intensification of food production.

Recognizing the Basics of Phytochrome-Interacting Factors in Plants for Abiotic Stress Tolerance

Shah Saud et al.

Summary: Phytochrome-interacting factor (PIF) is a type of basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor that plays a role in multiple biological processes in plants. It regulates plant growth and development, and also plays an important role in plant resistance to both abiotic and biotic stresses.

PIF4: Integrator of light and temperature cues in plant growth

Hang Zhao et al.

Summary: Plants have evolved sensory systems to coordinate their architecture and physiology with fluctuating temperatures, with PIF4 playing a central role in promoting plant growth and integrating environmental light and temperature cues. Recent studies have expanded the understanding of PIF4's regulatory functions, including its involvement in photomorphogenesis and thermomorphogenesis. Further research is needed to explore remaining questions and potential directions for PIF4-related studies.

Characterizations of a Plasma-Water System Generated by Repetitive Microsecond Pulsed Discharge with Air, Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Argon Gases Species

Nima Bolouki et al.

Summary: The study shows that different gas species have a significant impact on the pH level, ORP level, nitrite/nitrate concentrations, and hydrogen peroxide content of plasma-activated water (PAW). Argon and oxygen plasmas do not significantly affect the pH level of PAW, while air and nitrogen plasmas cause a sharp decrease in pH during the treatment. Additionally, oxygen plasma provides the highest level of hydrogen peroxide, while argon plasma, despite consuming less power, still has relatively high hydrogen peroxide contents compared to nitrogen and air plasmas.
