Highly Cytotoxic Osmium(II) Compounds and Their Ruthenium(II) Analogues Targeting Ovarian Carcinoma Cell Lines and Evading Cisplatin Resistance Mechanisms

Jana Hildebrandt et al.

Summary: This study investigates the anticancer activity and resistance evasion ability of 17 ruthenium complexes and four osmium analogues with cinnamic acid derivatives as O,S bidentate ligands. The results show that these compounds exhibit high cancer cell selectivity and cytotoxicity without strong effects on DNA damage and cell cycle, suggesting another mode of action.

Photoactivated Osmium Arene Anticancer Complexes

Xuling Xue et al.

Summary: Half-sandwich Os-arene complexes exhibit promising anticancer activity, especially the OsCUR-2 complex, which shows remarkable photocytotoxicity towards a range of cancer cell lines and has the potential for further development as a photosensitizer for anticancer photoactivated chemotherapy (PACT). The photochemistry of these complexes involves selective photodissociation of the arene ligand and oxidation of Os(II) to Os(III) under blue light or UVA excitation.

Novel organo-osmium(ii) proteosynthesis inhibitors active against human ovarian cancer cells reduce gonad tumor growth in Caenorhabditis elegans

Enrique Ortega et al.

Summary: This study reported the synthesis and characterization of novel osmium (II) complexes with potential as anticancer drugs, showing effective antiproliferative activity towards ovarian cancer cells and inhibitory effects in tumoral strains in vivo. The mechanism of action involves reduction of proteosynthesis, increase of apoptosis, and regulation of oxidative stress genes, potentially making osmium (II) complexes candidates for novel chemotherapeutic drugs.
