Modeling hydrogen-rock-brine interactions for the Jurassic reservoir and cap rocks from Polish Lowlands

Krzysztof Labus et al.

Summary: This study presents the geochemical modeling results of hydrogen-rock-brine interactions for different types of rocks from the Polish Lowland. Goethite is identified as the main component responsible for the consumption of stored hydrogen. The changes in rock porosity are found to be smaller in sandstones compared to mudstones and claystones. The findings provide insights into the behavior of hydrogen in underground storage conditions.

Underground hydrogen storage: A comprehensive review

Davood Zivar et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the technical aspects and feasibility of underground storage of hydrogen, including depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs, aquifers, and manmade underground cavities. It discusses mechanisms of underground hydrogen storage, various phenomena, modeling studies, ongoing research, and potential storage sites. It also briefly touches on technical challenges, remedial techniques, economic viability, and offers strategies for future research and development.

Storage of hydrogen, natural gas, and carbon dioxide - Geological and legal conditions

Radoslaw Tarkowski et al.

Summary: When choosing rock formations for underground gas storage, geological and reservoir conditions, including physico-chemical properties, aquifers, salt caverns, and legal aspects, should be considered. Factors such as gas tightness, underground storage site size, and reservoir conditions play a crucial role in determining the suitability of geological structures for gas storage.

Smectite Crystallite Swelling Under High Pressure of Methane

Pawel P. Ziemianski et al.

Summary: Clay minerals and organic matter together control the adsorption properties of methane gas in sediments and sedimentary rocks, with high-pressure environments playing a crucial role in hydrocarbon exploration and global warming issues. The study found that methane molecules can expand the interlayers of certain smectites at elevated pressure, influenced by the hydration level of interlayer cations and water content. This swelling phenomenon is reversible and driven by energetic factors, providing new insights into methane interaction with sedimentary rocks and explaining hysteresis in high-pressure methane adsorption isotherms.

Summary: This study explores numerical simulations of seasonal hydrogen storage in the Norne hydrocarbon field offshore Norway, finding that the thin gas zone is the most suitable target for hydrogen storage and suggesting that pre-injection of formation gas as a cushion gas can increase hydrogen recovery.
