Techno-economic assessment of various hydrogen production methods - A review

R. Yukesh Kannah et al.

Summary: In order to advance the use of hydrogen as a clean fuel in the future, it is necessary to conduct techno-economic and sensitivity analyses of existing hydrogen production platforms and processes, and to develop new methods to reduce overall production costs. Steam reforming of natural gas is currently the most efficient and cost-effective method for hydrogen production.

Analyzing the levelized cost of hydrogen in refueling stations with on-site hydrogen production via water electrolysis in the Italian scenario

M. Minutillo et al.

Summary: The study focused on the techno-economic assessment of on-site hydrogen refueling stations using PV plants integrated with electrolysis units in the Italian scenario. It found that the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) is influenced by investment costs, operational and maintenance costs, and electricity prices. The results showed that the LCOH values increase proportionally with changes in electricity mix and hydrogen production capacity.

Decarbonising city bus networks in Ireland with renewable hydrogen

Tubagus Aryandi Gunawan et al.

Summary: This study presents a nationwide hydrogen fuel supply chain system in Ireland, utilizing wind power to produce hydrogen and optimizing the supply chain through GIS for fuel cell electric buses. Results show the system can meet the fuel demand of multiple cities' buses, with relatively low operating costs, potentially competitive with diesel buses.

Optimal design of wind-powered hydrogen refuelling station for some selected cities of South Africa

T. R. Ayodele et al.

Summary: A techno-economic assessment was performed for wind-powered hydrogen refuelling stations in seven cities of South Africa, showing that they are viable with competitive production costs ranging from 6.34 $/kg to 8.97 $/kg. Cities located in the coastal region are more promising for siting wind-powered hydrogen refuelling stations compared to cities on the mainland, with potential to reduce CO2 and CO emissions effectively.

Evaluating the economic fairways for hydrogen production in Australia

Stuart D. C. Walsh et al.

Summary: Assessing the viability of hydrogen projects should take into account local energy resources, infrastructure, water supply, and proximity to export ports and energy markets. An economic model presented in this paper identifies Economic Fairways for high economic potential in hydrogen production, providing a tool for investors and policymakers to understand opportunities and infrastructure needs. Case studies conducted with the model in Australia show the potential for hydrogen production using renewable and non-renewable sources combined with carbon capture and storage.

The effect of parameters and irradiance estimation techniques on PV potential quantification: The case of Mexico

Carlos A. Cervantes-Ortiz et al.

Summary: This study used Mexico as a case study to investigate the impact of different models and interpolation techniques on solar potential assessment, as well as the importance of suitable areas for PV installation. The results showed significant differences between heuristic models and interpolation techniques, while the PV module investment cost, system balance, and annuity factor had the most significant impact on costs.
