Introducing oxophilic metal and interstitial hydrogen into the Pd lattice to boost electrochemical performance for alkaline ethanol oxidation

Cong Shen et al.

Summary: This study presents an achievable method to fabricate an efficient PdCoH nanosheets catalyst for ethanol oxidation by introducing cobalt and hydrogen atoms into the palladium lattice. The obtained catalyst exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance and higher mass activity compared to other Pd-based catalysts. The incorporation of cobalt and hydrogen atoms improves the anti-CO ability and C1 pathway selectivity, while the unique structure of the catalyst enhances CO tolerance and C1 selectivity.

Highly Dispersed Mo Sites on Pd Nanosheets Enable Selective Ethanol-to-Acetate Conversion

Shenglan He et al.

Summary: A highly active ethanol oxidation electrocatalyst was developed by decorating Mo sites on Pd nanosheets, increasing current density and achieving nearly 100% faradic efficiency for ethanol-to-acetate conversion without CO2 generation. This selective and CO2-free conversion offers a promising strategy for alcohol fuel cells to provide comparable current density and for the selective oxidation of biofuels to useful acetate intermediates.

Enhancing oxygen reduction electrocatalysis by tuning interfacial hydrogen bonds

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: The proton activity at the electrified interface plays a crucial role in the kinetics of proton-coupled electron transfer reactions. By using a library of protic ionic liquids on platinum and gold interfaces, researchers have successfully enhanced the oxygen reduction reaction activity by up to fivefold, showing a volcano-shaped dependence on the pK(a) of the ionic liquid. This enhancement is attributed to strengthened hydrogen bonds between ORR products and ionic liquids with similar pK(a)s, leading to favorable PCET kinetics.
