Control of intrinsic thermoacoustic instabilities using hydrogen fuel

Abdulla Ghani et al.

Summary: This conceptual numerical study explores a possible strategy for controlling unstable intrinsic thermoacoustic (ITA) modes through incremental addition of hydrogen fuel and investigates the impact on the stability of a laminar slit flame using various approaches. The study utilizes chemical kinetics solver, DNS, and acoustic network model to estimate ITA frequencies, compute Flame Transfer Function (FTF), and predict stability limits, showing good agreement with DNS data and allowing modeling of the impact of hydrogen on combustor stability.

Flame Transfer Functions and Dynamics of a Closely Confined Premixed Bluff Body Stabilized Flame With Swirl

Hakon T. Nygard et al.

Summary: The flame transfer function (FTF) and flame dynamics of a highly swirled, closely confined, premixed flame were studied over a wide range of equivalence ratios and bulk velocities, showing the importance of flame height to velocity ratio in scaling the FTF. Varying operating conditions resulted in different flame-wall interactions due to changes in flame height. For certain conditions, FTF modulations were observed due to interference of perturbations, but increasing effective confinement led to suppression of modulations. The study also successfully applied a distributed time lag (DTL) model to capture dominant time scales and examine the effect of effective confinement on the FTF response.

Effects of hydrogen addition to methane on the thermal and ignition delay characteristics of fuel-air, oxygen-enriched and oxy-fuel MILD combustion

E. Ebrahimi Fordoei et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that adding H2 to CH4 can result in a more uniform temperature field with higher peak and average temperatures, while compensation for additional ignition delay time can be achieved by considering the presence of H2 in the fuel composition.

Experimental study of the effects of hydrogen addition on the thermoacoustic instability in a variable-length combustor

Jianan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the self-excited thermoacoustic instability of hydrogen/methane premixed flames using a variable-length combustor. It was found that hydrogen concentration and chamber length were critical in determining acoustic oscillation modes and instability trends. Low frequency modes were mainly excited at low hydrogen concentrations, while higher frequency modes tended to occur at high hydrogen proportions.

Predicting instability frequency and amplitude using artificial neural network in a partially premixed combustor

Sanghyeok Kwak et al.

Summary: In this study, an artificial neural network was used to predict the frequency and amplitude of combustion instability, with experimental results showing that equivalence ratio, axial flame distance, and injection velocity play crucial roles in determining the instability. The ANN trained with three input parameters accurately predicted both the instability frequency and amplitude, with high correlation coefficients confirming the prediction accuracy.

The effect of hydrogen enrichment on the forced response of CH4/H2/Air laminar flames

Zhengli Lim et al.

Summary: Hydrogen-enrichment shifts the FDF gain drop-off to higher frequencies, increasing propensity to thermoacoustic instability and reducing the effective flame time delay. Sensitivity analyses showed that changes in FDF were predominantly driven by flame burning speed and insensitive to changes in Markstein length.

Bayesian inference and uncertainty quantification for hydrogen-enriched and lean-premixed combustion systems

Sajjad Yousefian et al.

Summary: The paper develops a computationally-efficient toolchain for probabilistic modelling of NOx emission in hydrogen-enriched and lean-premixed combustion systems, utilizing a combination of a chemical reactor network (CRN) model, non-intrusive polynomial chaos expansion based on the point collocation method (NIPCE-PCM), and the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. The calibrated model shows significant improvement in predicting exit temperature and NOx emission, and is used for global sensitivity and reliability analysis studies to optimize low-emission combustion systems.
