Experimental studies are conducted to investigate the non-isothermal evaporation and heat transfer of water droplets and films on structured walls. The results show that the textured surfaces can change the wettability and enhance the heat transfer, leading to an increased evaporation rate. Furthermore, self-organization of colloidal aqueous solution films under local heating is observed.
Experimental studies on non-isothermal evaporation and heat transfer of water droplets and films on structured walls are carried out. The textured surfaces change wettability from a hydrophilic to a hydrophobic wall in a wide range of the initial static contact angle of the drop. The evaporation of a drop on a textured surface is compared to that on a smooth (non-structured) wall. The wall textures lead to heat and mass transfer enhancement and to evaporation rate increase, which is due to an intensification of free convection in the liquid. Estimates of heat transfer enhancement due to several key factors are provided. Experiments on the evaporation of a film of a colloidal aqueous solution under spot laser heating are carried out on a textured wall. The local liquid heating is shown to result in self-organization of a cluster of particles in the form of hexagonal cells. (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
