Thermodynamic modeling and rational design of ionic liquids for pre-combustion carbon capture

Teng Zhou et al.

Summary: A systematic study was conducted to develop a model for predicting the vapor-liquid equilibrium of the CO2-H2-IL ternary system, and an optimization-based computer-aided ionic liquid design problem was formulated and solved to identify the best ILs for pre-combustion carbon capture processes. The hydroxyl-ammonium and hydroxylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ILs were found to be the most promising solvent candidates.

Analysis and selection of optimal solvent-based technologies for biogas upgrading

Andres Carranza-Abaid et al.

Summary: Biogas upgrading is a crucial industrial process for producing biomethane, with options including water scrubbing, physical scrubbing, and chemical scrubbing. Research shows that depending on factors such as raw biogas conditions, biomethane delivery requirements, and carbon taxes, biogas upgrading can be achieved using chemical scrubbing or physical solvents.

Computational Screening of Physical Solvents for CO2 Pre-combustion Capture

Wei Shi et al.

Summary: A computational scheme was used to screen physical solvents for CO2 pre-combustion capture, identifying diethyl sebacate with favorable physical properties and absorption performance. Experimental confirmation of diethyl sebacate's promising performance in CO2 capture was obtained, attributing to its low water loading and favorable CO2 interaction. The study also discovered a strong linear positive correlation between CO2 and H2O interactions with the same functional groups.

Towards improved cost evaluation of Carbon Capture and Storage from industry

Simon Roussanaly et al.

Summary: This paper contributes to the development of improved guidelines for cost evaluation of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) from industrial applications by discussing key challenges and factors often overlooked or insufficiently addressed in previous studies. Recommendations are given to consider different heat and power supply strategies, energy and carbon price scenarios, and factors affecting retrofitting costs and CO2 transport and storage. The importance of considering technological maturity level in assessing cost contingencies and uncertainties is also emphasized.

The Role of Carbon Capture and Storage in the Energy Transition

Hon Chung Lau et al.

Summary: This paper reviews and analyzes the ongoing energy transition from a high to a low carbon economy, highlighting the importance of decarbonizing different sectors and the role of CCS technologies. The slow pace of CCS implementation is concerning, but several ways to accelerate it are proposed, such as establishing regional CCS corridors and public-private partnerships for financing and technology transfer.

Effect of Power Plant Capacity on the CAPEX, OPEX, and LCOC of the CO2 Capture Process in Pre-Combustion Applications

Husain E. Ashkanani et al.

Summary: Modeling of CO2 capture in seven pre-combustion power plants with capacities ranging from 54 to 543 MW revealed that increasing power plant capacity leads to higher operating and capital expenditures, whereas the OPEX and CAPEX per ton of CO2 captured decrease, thus reducing the levelized cost of capturing CO2.

Ionic liquids/deep eutectic solvents for CO2 capture: Reviewing and evaluating

Yanrong Liu et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively collected and summarized the solubilities of CO2 in physical- and chemical-based ILs/DESs, as well as the COSMO-RS models predicting these properties. Chemical-based ILs/DESs were found to be more effective for CO2 capture, especially those with functionalized cations and anions, and superbase DESs.

Recent developments of deep eutectic solvent as absorbent for CO2 removal from syngas produced from gasification: Current status, challenges, and further research

Haryo Wibowo et al.

Summary: Gasification is increasingly used to convert solid fuel into combustible syngas, but the syngas often does not meet strict requirements and requires upgrading. CO2 removal is a common method, with deep eutectic solvent (DES) showing promise due to its high absorption performance and environmental friendliness. However, research on DES for CO2 removal from syngas is still in the early stages and more efforts are needed to explore its potential further.
