Numerical simulations of mixed-mode (I and II) notch tip fields in basal-textured magnesium alloys

K. V. Vaishakh et al.

Summary: Crystal plasticity based finite element simulations were performed to study the mixed-mode notch tip fields of a basal-textured Mg alloy under plane strain conditions. The results showed that the notch orientation profoundly affected the distribution of equivalent plastic strain and hydrostatic stress, highlighting the importance of plastic anisotropy of Mg alloys.

In-situ observation of twinning and detwinning in AZ31 alloy

Wu Gong et al.

Summary: The twinning and detwinning behavior of a commercial AZ31 magnesium alloy during cyclic compression-tension deformation was studied using various characterization techniques. The results showed that the volume fraction and number of residual twins increased with the number of cycles, leading to a decrease in the yield strength of compression deformation.

Dynamic fracture behavior of additively manufactured Scalmalloy®: Effects of build orientation, heat-treatment and loading-rate

John P. Isaac et al.

Summary: The study on Scalmalloy (R) specimens reveals that horizontal and diagonal builds exhibit superior dynamic crack initiation and growth characteristics, while heat treatment has little impact on dynamic fracture performance. The analysis also shows significant strain-rate sensitivity in quasi-static crack initiation and growth of horizontal build specimens compared to their dynamic counterparts.
