On the determination of the bending fatigue strength in and above the very high cycle fatigue regime of shot-peened gears

D. Fuchs et al.

Summary: To meet the demands of lightweight design goals and performance enhancement, shot-peening treatment can be applied to increase bending fatigue strength of gears in gearboxes. However, shot-peened gears may exhibit tooth root fracture damage at high load cycles, potentially leading to a further decrease in bending load carrying capacity.

Numerical model for bending fatigue life estimation of carburized spur gears with consideration of the adjacent tooth effect

Kresimir Vuckovic et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a computational model for predicting bending fatigue failure of case hardened spur gears, taking into account the effect of the adjacent tooth on bending fatigue lives. Through the model, it is found that bending fatigue lives can vary by approximately 22% when considering the adjacent tooth effect, which should be considered when estimating bending fatigue lives of spur gears.

Residual Stress Distribution Design for Gear Surfaces Based on Genetic Algorithm Optimization

Zhou Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the rolling contact fatigue of gear surfaces in a heavy loader gearbox using a critical plane-based multiaxial Fatemi-Socie criterion. It finds that the optimum residual stress distribution can maximize fatigue initiation life, especially when the friction coefficient is above its critical value. Deviation from the optimum residual stress distribution impacts fatigue initiation life, providing a useful guideline for designing residual stress distribution.
