Quantitative Mineral Mapping of Drill Core Surfaces II: Long-Wave Infrared Mineral Characterization Using μXRF and Machine Learning

Rocky D. Barker et al.

Summary: In this study, LWIR spectra of hydrothermally altered carbonate rock core samples were analyzed using Random Forest machine learning approach to predict mineral species and abundances. The Random Forest models showed comparable accuracy to traditional spectral unmixing techniques, providing a more robust and meaningful interpretation of LWIR spectra. This new approach has the potential to improve the accuracy and speed of infrared data interpretation for various deposit types.

Quantitative Mineral Mapping of Drill Core Surfaces I: A Method for μXRF Mineral Calculation and Mapping of Hydrothermally Altered, Fine-Grained Sedimentary Rocks from a Carlin-Type Gold Deposit

Rocky D. Barker et al.

Summary: This study utilized micro-X-ray fluorescence (μXRF) and linear programming (LP) to determine mineral distributions and abundances in drill core samples from Carlin-type gold deposits. The results showed that μXRF data analysis can provide accurate mineralogical structures, abundances, and textures. By comparing results from different methods and standards, the study demonstrates the significance of μXRF technology in mineralogical studies of fine-grained sedimentary rocks.

Microfracture-pore structure characterization and water-rock interaction in three lithofacies of the Lower Eagle Ford Formation

Qiming Wang et al.

Summary: The integrated study of microfracture-pore structure characterization and water-rock interaction in three typical lithofacies from the Lower Eagle Ford Formation revealed significant differences in porosity among different lithofacies, and suggested a close relationship between water vapor adsorption behavior and rock composition.

Porosity measurement of granular rock samples by modified bulk density analyses with particle envelopment

C. Zhao et al.

Summary: This study measured the porosities of granular samples using a modified bulk density method and helium pycnometry, aiming to assess isolated pores in total porosity. The results showed that the modified bulk density measurement provided semi-quantitative results with acceptable repeatability, and changes in effective porosity were related to grain size for sandstone and chalk, and isolated pores for shales with poor pore connectivity.
