Inconsistency in historical simulations and future projections of temperature and rainfall: A comparison of CMIP5 and CMIP6 models over Southeast Asia

Mohammed Magdy Hamed et al.

Summary: The objective of this research was to assess the difference in historical simulations and future projections of rainfall and temperature of CMIP5 and CMIP6 models over Southeast Asia (SEA). The results showed that the CMIP6 models performed well in simulating rainfall in SEA, but showed no significant improvement compared to CMIP5 models in terms of temperature simulation. The improvement in CMIP6 models was mainly in the reduction of uncertainty in ensemble simulation.

Inter-comparison of historical simulation and future projections of rainfall and temperature by CMIP5 and CMIP6 GCMs over Egypt

Mohammed Magdy Hamed et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of global climate models (GCMs) of CMIP6 compared to CMIP5 in predicting climate changes over Egypt, showing improvement in replicating historical rainfall and temperature climatology for CMIP6 models. The uncertainties in simulating seasonal variability were lower for CMIP6, indicating more aggravated scenarios of climate changes in Egypt than previously anticipated.

Projection of Hot and Cold Extremes in the Amu River Basin of Central Asia using GCMs CMIP6

Obaidullah Salehie et al.

Summary: Due to global warming, extreme temperatures have become more frequent and intense, especially in dry regions, with devastating consequences for the Amu river basin in Central Asia. This study projected warm and cold extremes for different socioeconomic scenarios in the basin using climate models. The results showed that the west of the basin would experience more hot extremes, while the east would see more cold extremes. The annual mean of maximum and minimum temperatures would significantly increase, with the increase in minimum temperatures being higher than maximum temperatures. This would lead to an increase in hot extremes and a decrease in cold extremes, with the west experiencing a higher increase in hot extremes and the east experiencing a higher decrease in cold extremes.

Advances in CMIP6 INM-CM5 over CMIP5 INM-CM4 for precipitation simulation in South Korea

Young Hoon Song et al.

Summary: This study compared the historical and future simulations of precipitation in South Korea using different models, and identified differences in projections for different scenarios. Results showed that CMIP6 models performed better, with higher precipitation change rates and lower uncertainties in the future, particularly in the NW region. Differences between RCP4.5 and SSP2-4.5 were larger than between RCP8.5 and SSP5-8.5.

An Evaluation of CMIP6 Historical Simulations of the Cold Season Teleconnection between Tropical Indo-Pacific Sea Surface Temperatures and Precipitation in Southwest Asia, the Coastal Middle East, and Northern Pakistan and India

Mathew Barlow et al.

Summary: The study examines the ability of six CMIP6 models to reproduce the observed teleconnection between tropical Indo-Pacific SSTs and precipitation in Southwest Asia. The models capture some broad features of the teleconnections, but there is a wide range in their ability to reproduce the magnitude and details. The ability of the models to accurately propagate the tropical signal into the region varies, especially in the CME and NPI regions.

Summary: The study proposes a novel approach based on FESA for evaluating the performance of four reanalysis gridded precipitation datasets in Egypt, with CHELSA identified as the best. Results were confirmed using conventional statistics and visual presentation, showing CHELSA's superiority over GPCC in representing precipitation in Egypt.
