Effects of increasing air temperature on physiological and productive responses of dairy cows at different relative humidity and air velocity levels

M. Zhou et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of increasing ambient temperature on the physiological and productive responses of dairy cows at different relative humidity and air velocity levels. The results showed that relative humidity and air velocity significantly affected the respiratory rate, rectal temperature, skin temperature, and milk production of the cows.

The influence of shade availability on the effectiveness of the Dairy Heat Load Index (DHLI) to predict lactating cow behavior, physiology, and production traits

J. C. Lees et al.

Summary: Numerous climatic indices have been used to predict the impact of hot and cold weather on animal production and welfare. The Dairy Heat Load Index (DHLI) was developed as an alternative to the Temperature Humidity Index (THI) for predicting adverse climatic conditions in dairy cows. The experiment found that DHLI was a better predictor of certain behaviors and physiological responses in shaded and unshaded cows compared to THI. Incorporation of additional factors is needed for DHLI to be an effective tool for managing heat stress in dairy cows.

An updated review on cattle thermoregulation: physiological responses, biophysical mechanisms, and heat stress alleviation pathways

Mateus Medeiros dos Santos et al.

Summary: Heat stress is a major obstacle to efficient cattle production systems, with potential adverse effects on cattle including increased core body temperature, physiological imbalance, and decreased reproductive and production capabilities. Strategies to mitigate these effects are essential for improving production systems in the face of climate change.

A mechanistic thermal balance model of dairy cattle

Jinghui Li et al.

Summary: A dynamic model was developed to predict the thermal balance of Holstein dairy cattle, showing sensitivity to heat production, surface area, respiration, and sweating parameters. The model accurately simulated body temperatures under typical summer conditions in California, providing insights for the use of cooling strategies in dairy facilities.

Development and evaluation of thermal models for predicting skin temperature of dairy cattle

Geqi Yan et al.

Summary: Heat stress significantly affects dairy production, and predicting skin temperature is crucial for guiding climate control systems. The study developed thermal models to predict Tskin of dairy cows, with the mechanistic model performing best for mean Tskin and the thermoregulatory model providing satisfactory performance for maximum Tskin. Environmental parameters impact the models' prediction performance under heat stress conditions.
