Bioactive polysaccharides from red seaweed as potent food supplements: a systematic review of their extraction, purification, and biological activities

Si-Min Qiu et al.

Summary: Most marine macroalgae have bioactive compounds, red seaweeds in particular are rich sources of bioactive polysaccharides with various physiological and biological activities. However, the lack of comprehensive information and human clinical trials on red seaweed polysaccharides limits their industrial-scale utilization in functional foods. This review summarizes recent information on the extraction, purification, biological activities, and molecular principles of red seaweed polysaccharides, providing a basis for further research on their structure, mechanisms, and applications in functional foods.

Sulfated polysaccharides from Undaria pinnatifida improved high fat diet-induced metabolic syndrome, gut microbiota dysbiosis and inflammation in BALB/c mice

Pingrui Jiang et al.

Summary: Undaria pinnatifida has shown positive effects on reducing serum lipids and fat accumulation, as well as improving type 2 diabetes. This study demonstrated that sulfated polysaccharides from U. pinnatifida can reduce weight gain, fat accumulation, and metabolic disorders in mice fed with a high-fat diet, while also improving gut microbiota dysbiosis and reducing metabolic endotoxemia. The dose of UPSP has a relationship with its effects on physiological indexes, gut microbiota community, and nutrient utilization.

Interaction of sulfated polysaccharides with intestinal Bacteroidales plays an important role in its biological activities

Xiaona Sun et al.

Summary: This study found that sulfated polysaccharides from pacific abalone can alter the gut microbiota structure and increase relative abundances of certain Bacteroidales members, indicating the important role of intestinal Bacteroidales in the bioactivities of AGSP. Additionally, there is an AGSP utilization network among Bacteroidales species, which influences the anti-inflammatory activity and cytotoxicity of AGSP.
