Largely Enhancing the Blocking Energy Barrier and Temperature of a Linear Cobalt(II) Complex through the Structural Distortion: A Theoretical Exploration

Fang Lu et al.

Summary: By investigating a two-coordinate cobalt(II) compound, it was found that altering the Co-C bond lengths and twist angle phi had an impact on the magnetic anisotropy. While decreasing the Co-C bond lengths reduced the energy barrier, rotating the twist angle phi from 60 to 0 degrees surprisingly increased the energy barrier and blocking temperature significantly.

Mononuclear Dysprosium Alkoxide and Aryloxide Single-Molecule Magnets

Vijay S. Parmar et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that mononuclear lanthanide (Ln) complexes can be high-performing single-molecule magnets (SMMs). The focus is on mononuclear Dy-III alkoxide and aryloxide SMMs with coordination numbers up to eight, covering synthesis, solid-state structures and magnetic attributes. Brief overviews are also provided of mononuclear Tb-III, Ho-III, Er-III and Yb-III alkoxide and aryloxide SMMs.

Single-Molecule Magnets: From Mn12-ac to dysprosium metallocenes, a travel in time

Andoni Zabala-Lekuona et al.

Summary: The discovery of Single-Molecule Magnets in 1993 revolutionized the field of information storage by shrinking the size of bits to molecular levels. Despite initially operating at temperatures near absolute zero, collaboration between chemists and physicists have led to the development of materials that can operate above liquid nitrogen temperatures. The evolution of SMMs has involved the study of various routes towards high performance materials, with each route essential for understanding the quantum dynamics behind these molecules.

Regulating the magnetic properties of seven-coordinated Dy(III) single-ion magnets through the effect of positional isomers on axial crystal-field

Yubao Dong et al.

Summary: Six Dy(III) single-ion magnets with different magnetic properties were synthesized, with complex 6 showing the best performance and its magnetic hysteresis loop remaining open at a low temperature of 21 K. Crystal structures revealed a switching of local symmetry as a main factor for magnetic property distinctions, along with the impact of OMe-substituted groups. These results highlight the importance of considering positional isomerism when designing ligands for Dy-SIMs to avoid overlooking potential factors affecting magnetic performance.

Improving the single-molecule magnet properties of two pentagonal bipyramidal Dy3+ compounds by the introduction of both electron-withdrawing and -donating groups

Li Zhu et al.

Summary: By introducing specific functional groups into the molecular structure, the magnetic anisotropy and single-molecule magnet behavior of the compounds were successfully regulated, enhancing their magnetic properties. Both experimental and ab initio calculation results confirm that the simultaneous introduction of electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups can lead to improved properties of the PBP Dy-SMMs.
