In vitro gastrointestinal stability, bioaccessibility and potential biological activities of betalains and phenolic compounds in cactus berry fruits (Myrtillocactus geometrizans)

Mara Montiel-Sanchez et al.

Summary: Cactus berry is a scarcely studied Mexican wild fruit with bioactive compounds that demonstrate antioxidant, anti-hyperglycemic, and anti-inflammatory activities. The fruit contains a variety of metabolites, with Phyllocactin and Isorhamnetin rhamnosyl-rutinoside being the most abundant. Studies suggest that cactus berry could be a promising candidate for a sustainable healthy diet.

Ultrasound-Assisted Green Extraction (UAE) of Antioxidant Compounds (Betalains and Phenolics) from Opuntia stricta var. Dilenii's Fruits: Optimization and Biological Activities

Ivan Gomez-Lopez et al.

Summary: This study aimed to optimize the green extraction of betalains and phenolic compounds from Opuntia stricta var. Dillenii's fruits using ultrasound-assisted extraction. The most efficient extraction time was 5 minutes with the best combination of 50% amplitude, 15% ethanol in solvent, and 20°C temperature. All applied UAE combinations significantly improved the in vitro bioactive activities of the extracts compared to standard homogenization processes.

Characterization, Stability, and Bioaccessibility of Betalain and Phenolic Compounds from Opuntia stricta var. Dillenii Fruits and Products of Their Industrialization

Ivan Gomez-Lopez et al.

Summary: In the present study, a total of 60 betalain and phenolic compounds in Opuntia stricta var. Dillenii fresh fruits and industrial products were characterized and quantified using HPLC-DAD-ESI/MS and HPLC-DAD-MS/QTOF, with the pulp showing the highest content of total betalains and the peel containing the most abundant phenolic acids and flavonoids. The in vitro gastrointestinal digestion revealed the bioaccessibility of betanins and flavonoids varied depending on the compound, with the fruit peel showing potential for obtaining antioxidant extracts due to its composition and bioaccessibilities of antioxidant compounds.
