A review of opportunities and challenges of chatbots in education

Gwo-Jen Hwang et al.

Summary: This study explores the trends of chatbots in education studies by conducting a literature review. The analysis of relevant papers published in the SSCI journals reveals that the United States, Taiwan, and Hong Kong are the top contributors. Most studies adopted quantitative methods and ANCOVA was the most frequently used approach for comparing the performances or perceptions of different student groups. The study finds that there is still a lack of empirical research on the use of effective learning designs or strategies with chatbots in education.

Designing Personality-Adaptive Conversational Agents for Mental Health Care

Rangina Ahmad et al.

Summary: Millions of people face mental health issues each year, leading to a greater demand for health services. Conversational agents (CAs), a new technology, hold promise for addressing the shortage of healthcare providers and improving access to treatment. However, current CAs are limited in their ability to understand dynamic human behavior and provide tailored responses. To tackle this problem, the authors conducted a design science research project to develop personality-adaptive conversational agents (PACAs) specifically for mental health care. Evaluation results with psychologists and psychiatrists suggest that PACAs could be a promising source of mental health support. The authors contribute to design knowledge for CAs and provide guidance for practitioners aiming to design PACAs, which can enhance interaction with users seeking mental health support.

Applying a principle of explicability to AI research in Africa: should we do it?

Mary Carman et al.

Summary: Developing and implementing artificial intelligence systems ethically, particularly in African contexts, requires ensuring that these systems are not only just, fair, and intelligible, but also compatible with the values and interests of the local societies. Adopting a principle of explicability can contribute to responsible AI development that is sensitive to African values and interests, while also helping tackle computational challenges in machine learning research. Ultimately, the goal of ensuring AI systems are ethically sound is not only to meet moral standards, but also to drive progress in the field itself.
