Sleeve gastrectomy-induced endocrine changes in the remnant stomachs of premenopausal and postmenopausal rats: role of the estrogen receptors

Hayyam Babayev et al.

Summary: Performing sleeve gastrectomy in the postmenopausal state leads to a greater reduction in gastric glucagon-like peptide-1 production. The use of ER agonists can upregulate gastrin-expressing cells, ameliorate gastric injury, and mitigate bone loss.

Melatonin and the health of menopausal women: A systematic review

Yulia Treister-Goltzman et al.

Summary: Melatonin plays a role in aging and can be a safe and effective treatment for menopausal women. A systematic review found that melatonin administration can have a positive impact on bone density, BMI, sleep quality, and climacteric symptoms in menopausal women. Studies also showed no independent effect of melatonin on hemodynamic measures or glucose metabolism.

The Lancet women and cardiovascular disease Commission: reducing the global burden by 2030

Birgit Vogel et al.

Summary: Despite decades of grassroots campaigns to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease in women, there has been stagnation in reducing the overall burden of the disease in the past decade. This Commission aims to fill knowledge gaps and provide recommendations to reduce the global burden of cardiovascular disease in women by 2030, with a focus on raising awareness of gender-related disparities.

Summary: Melatonin is the primary circadian output signal from the brain, with protective effects on bone density. Studies have shown that supplementing with melatonin can increase bone density and prevent bone loss.

Effects of exogenous melatonin on sleep quality and menopausal symptoms in menopausal women: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Mingyu Yi et al.

Summary: A systematic review and meta-analysis on the effects of melatonin intake in menopausal women found that melatonin seems to improve physical symptoms, but does not significantly improve general menopausal symptoms, sleep quality, mood state, estradiol levels, and BMI. More large-scale clinical randomized trials are needed to validate these conclusions.
