Zein electrospun fibers purification and vanillin impregnation in a one-step supercritical process to produce safe active packaging

Emanuela Drago et al.

Summary: The search for advanced packaging solutions in recent years has focused on systems capable of extending the food shelf-life, with active packaging being one of the most interesting strategies. This paper proposes the combined use of electrospinning and supercritical fluids impregnation for producing active packaging, which allows for controlled release of antioxidant and antimicrobial agents. Through characterizations and study of release kinetics, it is found that these methods permit calibration of migration kinetics to obtain active food packaging with controlled release according to the final application. Comparing the two processes, it is observed that supercritical fluid impregnation results in controlled release of the active principle, while electrospinning process shows fast release kinetics.

Amphiphilic self-assembly peptides: Rational strategies to design and delivery for drugs in biomedical applications

Chunqian Zhao et al.

Summary: Amphiphilic self-assembling peptides are widely used in biomedical fields due to their good compatibility and potential for drug delivery. However, there are no defined rules for their design and development, and rational strategies are needed for research. These peptides have a variety of applications in drug delivery, including delivering hydrophobic drugs and vaccines.

Lignin-Zein Composite: Synthesis, Three-Dimensional Printing, and Microbial Degradation

Jin Gyun Lee et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a fully plant-based, rapidly degradable lignin and zein composite blend that can be transformed into various 3D structures using extrusion 3D printing. The blend, consisting of corn-derived zein and insoluble lignin granules, exhibits good biodegradability and processability, potentially reducing our dependence on petroleum oil-based plastics.

Preparation and evaluation of PEG-coated zein nanoparticles for oral drug delivery purposes

C. Reboredo et al.

Summary: The study aimed to produce PEG-coated nanoparticles with mucus-permeating properties for oral drug delivery using simple procedures and regulatory-approved compounds. The nanoparticles were successfully coated with PEG 35,000, reducing their hydrophobic surface and increasing their hydrophilicity. This coating allowed the nanoparticles to have increased mobility in mucus, potentially enhancing the oral bioavailability of biomacromolecules and other biologically active compounds.
