Unique Optical Periodicity Assembly of Discrete Dendritic Lamellae and Pyramidal Single Crystals in Poly(ε-caprolactone)

Selvaraj Nagarajan et al.

Summary: The unique zig-zag banded morphology of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL), crystallized at high temperatures and confined in thin films, is found to be assembled of two different crystal entities: edge-on dendritic lamellar protrusions and flat-on pyramidal single crystals. These alternating PCL optical bands create straight dendrites and ridge bands, leading to a unique assembly mechanism of periodic optical rings. By utilizing melt crystallization techniques, PCL single crystals can be prepared and customized for various nanopattern applications.

Synchrotron X-Ray Analysis and Morphology Evidence for Stereo-Assemblies of Periodic Aggregates in Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) with Unusual Photonic Iridescence

Yu-Hsuan Liao et al.

Summary: This study explores the 3D morphology of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) crystallized in the presence of diluents of poly(1,3-trimethylene adipate) and poly(ethylene oxide) using a novel approach coupled with selective etching. Various microscopic techniques and synchrotron microbeam X-ray analysis were used to observe the crystal periodic aggregation mechanisms, proving the presence of periodic grating architectures in banded PHB. The findings suggest a critical breakthrough in understanding the grating structure in banded PHB by resemblance to nature's iridescence crystals and photonic reflection results.

Lamellar Assembly Mechanism on Dendritic Ring-Banded Spherulites of Poly(ε-caprolactone)

Selvaraj Nagarajan

Summary: The self-assembly structures of lamellae in optical ring bands have a critical impact on their optical and physical arrangements. Two different types of dendritic banded spherulites have been identified, and the optical ring patterns of these spherulites are mainly differentiated by the fractal orientation of crystal branches in the ridge region. The 3D-lamellar assembly mechanisms proposed provide an explanation for the growth of dendritic ring-banded spherulites at different temperatures.
