Selective tandem catalysis for the synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from glucose over in-situ phosphated titania catalysts: Insights into structure, bi-functionality and performance in flow microreactors

Wenze Guo et al.

Summary: The synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from glucose over in-situ phosphated titania catalysts is presented. Phosphates were incorporated into the titania framework forming Lewis-Bronsted acid pairs that enhanced the glucose turnover and HMF selectivity. The catalyst showed high HMF yield in a biphasic system and could be regenerated by calcination after deactivation mainly by humin deposition.

Huan Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a class of benzenesulfonic acid-grafted metal-organic frameworks with strong acidity and hydrophobicity were successfully prepared and applied in the catalytic conversion of fructose to HMF. Due to its better hydrophobicity and oleophilicity, the hydrophobic MOF exhibited higher catalytic activity and selectivity in the HMF synthesis.

Efficient Conversion of Glucose to 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural over a Sn-Modified SAPO-34 Zeolite Catalyst

Xiangbo Song et al.

Summary: Efficient conversion of biomass-derived carbohydrates into highly value-added 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) using Sn/SAPO-34 catalysts was investigated. Control of Sn loading amount could adjust acid strength and amount in the catalyst, while excessively high loading would decrease performance due to structure damage. The 5%Sn/SAPO-34 catalyst showed superior performance in achieving high HMF yield from glucose conversion.
