Managing chronic rhinosinusitis in severe asthma

Uma S. Ramaswamy et al.

Summary: This review discusses the relationship between chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and severe asthma, highlighting the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in the management of these patients. Recent advances in evaluation and treatment aim to improve patient symptoms and potentially address underlying immune dysfunction. Real-world studies are needed to determine the most effective treatment algorithm for CRS and severe asthma patients.

Onset of effect and impact on health-related quality of life, exacerbation rate, lung function, and nasal polyposis symptoms for patients with severe eosinophilic asthma treated with benralizumab (ANDHI): a randomised, controlled, phase 3b trial

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of benralizumab in severe eosinophilic asthma patients, including onset of effect, impact on health-related quality of life, exacerbation rate, lung function, and nasal polyposis symptoms. Results showed that benralizumab significantly reduced exacerbation risk and improved HRQOL, lung function, and nasal symptoms early in the treatment period compared to placebo.

Summary: Research on manipulating mouse and human eosinophils through experimental systems has made significant progress in revealing their roles in the immune system. Anti-eosinophil therapeutics have emerged as a new class of drugs, offering valuable insights into the consequences of eosinophil knockout in humans.

Burden of Disease in Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps

Claus Bachert et al.

Summary: CRSwNP is a disease with type 2 inflammation that greatly impacts patients' quality of life with severe symptoms. Existing treatments may lead to recurrence of nasal polyps and adverse effects, particularly in patients with comorbid conditions like asthma and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-exacerbated respiratory disease. New therapies targeting type 2 inflammatory disease pathophysiology are needed to effectively control symptoms and minimize recurrence.

Biology and Function of Eosinophils in Chronic Rhinosinusitis With or Without Nasal Polyps

Bruce S. Bochner et al.

Summary: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a complex medical condition characterized by chronic innate and adaptive mucosal inflammation, often treated with corticosteroids and sinus surgery, but newer biologics have been evaluated as alternatives. Studies suggest that a prominent feature in CRS is type 2 inflammation, including tissue eosinophilia.
