Summary: Serious roadside pollution in congested urban areas remains a persistent issue in densely populated cities. While current traffic pollution control measures have helped reduce particulate matter emissions, new vehicular technologies are emerging to further protect citizens from exhaust-gas emissions. The electric vehicle (EV) shows promise in reducing traffic-induced pollution, but until fuel vehicles (FVs) are phased out, traffic flow will be a mix of both. The introduction of traffic management through road pricing aims to reduce tailpipe emissions by imposing environmental capacity constraints for a network traffic mix of EVs and FVs, with higher tolls on FVs than on EVs.
