Modeling streamflow variability at the regional scale: (1) perceptual model development through signature analysis

Fabrizio Fenicia et al.

Summary: This study develops a perceptual model approach for a regional scale catchment, using a top-down approach based on expert interpretation of streamflow responses. The results show that precipitation, lithology, topography, and land use have significant control over the spatial variability of average streamflow at the scale of the study, while vegetation and soil play a minor role. The developed perceptual model can be useful for others working in large catchments in different hydroclimates.

Terrain analysis, erosion simulations, and sediment fingerprinting: a case study assessing the erosion sensitivity of agricultural catchments in the border of the volcanic plateau of Southern Brazil

Alice P. B. Dambroz et al.

Summary: The purpose erosion and its spatial distribution in three agricultural headwater catchments were assessed in the border of the volcanic plateau in Southern Brazil. The results showed that areas covered by crop fields, grasslands, and those adjacent to the drainage network are the most sensitive to erosion. Unpaved roads were identified as significant sediment sources.

Anthropogenic sediment traps and network dislocation in a lowland UK river

Ian D. L. Foster et al.

Summary: Farm ponds, reservoirs, and in-stream weirs are common in the lowland river catchments of the UK, and have significant impacts on longitudinal connectivity and sediment transport pathways. Research shows that these structures trap and release sediment in a particle size-specific manner, with finer sediments being depleted in stored sediment while coarser sands are retained.

Soil properties characterization for land-use planning and soil management in watersheds under family farming

Jose Miguel Reichert et al.

Summary: Environmental monitoring of small, rural watersheds in southern Brazil was conducted to assess the impact of soil conservation and environment management practices. The study found that soil physical, chemical, and biological properties played a decisive role in defining agricultural soils in rural watersheds. Tobacco farming practices led to rapid degradation of soil properties, highlighting the need for reorienting soil management to prevent further degradation and restore soil quality.

Strategies for identifying pollution sources in a headwater catchment based on multi-scale water quality monitoring

Franciele de Bastos et al.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the spatial and temporal dynamics of water quality in rural headwater catchments and its implications for environmental monitoring programs. By monitoring parameters in different sub-basins with physiographic traits, it was found that agriculture had the greatest impact on water resources.

Improving the quantification of sediment source contributions using different mathematical models and spectral preprocessing techniques for individual or combined spectra of ultraviolet-visible, near- and middle-infrared spectroscopy

Tales Tiecher et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the accuracy of PLSR and SVM in estimating sediment source contributions, the impact of different spectral preprocessing techniques, and the influence of UV-Vis, NIR, and MIR regions on the results. The combination of UV-Vis, NIR, MIR bands with spectral preprocessing techniques showed significant improvements in model accuracy, highlighting the potential of spectroscopy as an alternative to conventional geochemical approaches in discerning sediment sources in agricultural catchments in subtropical regions.

How water flow components affect sediment dynamics modeling in a Brazilian catchment

Claudia Alessandra Peixoto de Barros et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the hydrological and erosive process dynamics in the catchment, revealing that 62% of the hydrograph is formed by groundwater + soil water, especially in autumn-winter and for low-medium magnitude events, with a dilution effect observed during rainfall events on dissolved silicon (DSi) concentration and suspended sediment concentration. The performance of physics-based models in a catchment with very fragile soils and frequent changes in land use is impacted by runoff separation.

The evolving perceptual model of streamflow generation at the Panola Mountain Research Watershed

Brent T. Aulenbach et al.

Summary: The Panola Mountain Research Watershed (PMRW) is a forested catchment in the Southeastern United States where observations, experiments, and numerical modeling have been conducted over the past 35 years, leading to valuable insights regarding streamflow generation mechanisms. The extensive characterization of soil and bedrock has played a key role in forming hypotheses and understanding water flow mechanisms, demonstrating the importance of long-term studies and field evidence accumulation.

Sediment source apportionment using optical property composite signatures in a rural catchment, Brazil

Fabio Farias Amorim et al.

Summary: Identifying key sources of sediment in an agricultural catchment in Brazil is crucial for soil and water quality protection. Through low-cost analytical procedures, the study found that channel banks are the primary source of sediment in the area, highlighting the need for targeted protection efforts.

Unpaved road conservation planning at the catchment scale

Summary: The study highlights the significant contribution of poorly designed and maintained unpaved rural roads to erosive processes, particularly on steep slopes in areas of shallow soil. Modeling hydrological processes at the catchment scale is a useful strategy for selecting effective conservation practices.

Impact of data sources to DEM construction and application to runoff and sediment yield modelling using LISEM model

C. A. P. de Barros et al.

Summary: Interpolated digital elevation models (DEM) from different sources were used to evaluate the impact of terrain description quality on a process-based erosion model. Although planialtimetric surveys may improve accuracy, high costs and time constraints were observed. Even with better accuracy in relief description (GNSS/RTK), erosion parameters calibrated did not meet acceptable physical limits.
