The use of water stable isotopes for a better understanding of hydrogeological processes in Haiti: overview of existing δ18O and δ2H data

L. Gourcy et al.

Summary: Isotope hydrological studies carried out in Haiti since 1987 have been effective in improving conceptual models of the country's principal aquifers. However, many of these studies have been limited and unpublished. Therefore, it is important to share the available datasets with scientists and water managers to support further studies and decision-making. A unique database has been compiled, containing 11 datasets, which includes 248 delta O-18 and delta H-2 results from water samples collected throughout the country.

Data and insights to advance characterization of groundwater resources in the Plaine des Gonaives, Haiti

James K. Adamson et al.

Summary: The Plaine des Gonaives in Haiti houses an important yet data-scarce coastal aquifer. This study aims to gain insights into the groundwater resources and to guide sustainable management. The alluvial aquifer covers a large area and exhibits varying hydraulic conductivities, influenced by underlying bedrock.

Recharge, delayed groundwater-level rise and specific yield in the Triassic karst aquifer of the Kopa Mountain, in the Western Carpathians, Slovakia

Peter Malik et al.

Summary: A significant delay of more than a year between precipitation recharge and groundwater-level upturn was observed in the Triassic karstic aquifer of the Kopa Mt. in Slovakia. The groundwater level is deep, ranging from 113-300 meters below ground surface, yet evenly distributed at a similar elevation.

Long-term trends in karst spring discharge and relation to climate factors and changes

Francesco Fiorillo et al.

Summary: This study analyzed long karst spring discharge series in southern Italy, finding a general decrease in spring discharge over the last few decades, with temperature increase playing a significant role in addition to precipitation change. The Weibull distribution was chosen for frequency analysis of the hydrological series. The relationship between spring discharge, rainfall, North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and temperature series was also investigated.

Geological and hydrogeological assessment of the Brito Formation: Municipio de Tola, Nicaragua

James K. Adamson et al.

Summary: Groundwater resources in Nicaragua's Pacific coast, primarily sourced from the aquifer system associated with the Brito Formation, are vulnerable to drought, increased abstraction, and climate change due to factors such as geological structure, hydrogeological characteristics, and climate dynamics. This study in the Tola municipality highlights the importance of understanding the complex hydrogeology in the region for sustainable water development and provides valuable insights for potential future studies and investments in similar coastal sandstone aquifers in Central America and the Caribbean.

Isotopic tracers of sources of water for springs from the Edwards Aquifer, Central Cexas, USA

Lijun Tian et al.

Summary: The study on stable isotopes of water from five springs in the Edwards Aquifer system reveals a bimodal distribution of groundwater sources, with different hydrochemical water types evolving due to varying proportions of groundwater and epikarst interflow supply.

Development of Predictive Models for Water Budget Simulations of Closed-Basin Lakes: Case Studies of Lakes Azuei and Enriquillo on the Island of Hispaniola

Mahrokh Moknatian et al.

Summary: The historical water level fluctuations of the neighboring Caribbean lakes of Azuei and Enriquillo on Hispaniola have shown random periods of synchronous and asynchronous behaviors. Despite being exposed to the same climatic forces and being directly next to each other, both lakes exhibit independent dynamics. The study developed numerical models for the lakes based on their main drivers and constraints, and found good performance in simulating volume change and volume time series.

Integrating field work and large-scale modeling to improve assessment of karst water resources

Andreas Hartmann et al.

Summary: This paper presents the first global effort to integrate experimental approaches and large-scale modeling to assess karst water resources. The study shows that soil moisture is a crucial variable that better distinguishes recharge dynamics in different climates and for different land cover types. The newly developed dataset of karst spring discharges provides important insights into the variability of discharge volumes and recharge areas globally.
