This study presents a seismic reflection profile that reveals the production zone of the Cerro Prieto geothermal field, as well as its structural features and rock units, backed by well information. It also identifies a potential geothermal prospect. The study contributes to understanding the role of intrusive bodies on sediment-hosted geothermal systems.
We present a legacy crooked-line seismic reflection profile intersecting the Cerro Prieto geothermal field's production zone, located in the basin of the same name. Structural features such as the Cerro Prieto and Imperial transform faults can be seen. Interpretation of rock units was backed with well information gathered in historical and recent studies of the area. Additionally, a second basin was identified (here called Cachanilla) showing similar seismic signatures to those observed in Cerro Prieto, thus raising the possibility of being a geothermal prospect. With this study, we hope to contribute to understanding the role of intrusive bodies on sediment-hosted geothermal systems.
