Effect of stress path on mechanical behaviours of frozen subgrade soil

Mingde Shen et al.

Summary: This paper systematically investigates the mechanical behaviors of frozen subgrade soil under different stress paths, finding that stress paths significantly affect the mechanical properties of frozen soil. A new nonlinear strength criterion is proposed to predict the experimental strength surface, effectively describing the multiaxial failure characteristics of frozen soil.

Dynamic responses of frozen subgrade soil exposed to freeze-thaw cycles

Zhiwei Zhou et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates the effects of freeze-thaw cycles on the dynamic responses of frozen subgrade soil, revealing different critical cycle numbers for dynamic shear modulus and damping ratio under different freezing low temperatures. A theoretical model is developed to describe the evolutionary features of these parameters, providing valuable insights for assessing the degeneration of engineering properties in frozen subgrade soil.

Measuring and modeling the dielectric constant of soil during freezing and thawing processes: an application on silty clay

Xiangtian Xu et al.

Summary: This study developed a new test method to accurately measure and model the dielectric constant of soil during freezing and thawing processes. The effects of freezing and thawing processes, water content, and salt on the dielectric constant of soil were comprehensively compared and analyzed. The results showed that the soil dielectric constant can be divided into linear and nonlinear stages as a function of temperature, with higher values during freezing compared to thawing.

Meso- and Macro-Mechanical Analysis of the Frost-Heaving Effect of Void Water on Asphalt Pavement

Jiancun Fu et al.

Summary: In cold regions, it is important to quantitatively determine the frost-heaving effect of asphalt pavement using a mechanical method to control the damages caused by frost heaving. A simplified hollow sphere model and phase transition equations were used to simulate the effect of frost heaving on the pavement. The study also found similarities between the compressive strength of asphalt mixture under freeze-thaw testing condition and the internal stress under frost-heaving condition.

Influence of snow cover on temperature field of frozen ground

Gaosheng Li et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the heat transport laws of frozen ground with phase changes under periodic temperature boundary conditions and explored the effects of snow cover on the temperature fields of frozen ground and subgrade in cold regions. The results showed that snow cover can significantly increase soil temperature, and have different effects on permafrost table and permafrost base.

An evaluation of soil thermal conductivity models based on the porosity and degree of saturation and a proposal of a new improved model

Weidong Zhang et al.

Summary: The study compared and evaluated eight soil thermal conductivity models, finding that empirical models have higher predictive capabilities than theoretical models, but theoretical models have definite physical meanings. The newly proposed model performed better in calculating thermal conductivity, with Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) values both less than 0.1 Wm(-1)K(-1), providing important references for the selection and application of soil thermal conductivity models.
