Variation of gas phase combustion properties of complex fuels during vaporization: Comparison for distillation and droplet scenarios

Lei Luo et al.

Summary: The study formulates surrogate mixtures for modeling real fuels based on gaseous combustion property targets and liquid physical properties. Experimental results show significant variations in gaseous combustion properties during droplet vaporization due to the wide distribution of compounds' volatility. This suggests the development of vaporization models that can capture preferential vaporization of a target real fuel for further spray modeling.

A molecular dynamics study of binary-component n-alkane fuel vaporization characteristics at sub/supercritical nitrogen environments

Yanzhi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the gas-liquid interface characteristics and phase transition behavior of binary-component n alkane fuels in sub/supercritical nitrogen environments. Molecular dynamics simulation was used to analyze the vapor-liquid equilibrium assumption and transition mechanism from VLE to non-VLE. The results show that the vaporization behavior of binary-component fuels varies in different environments, with different roles played by the light-end and heavy-end components.

Impact of preferential vaporization on combustion chamber deposit generation from a gasoline surrogate: A parametric study

A. Roque et al.

Summary: The study found that the injection pressure and impingement-surface temperature have a significant impact on the combustion chamber deposit (CCD) inside a constant volume combustion chamber. Regardless of the injection pressure, the maximum production of CCD occurred at a wall temperature of 393 K, with an additional increase in temperature reducing the build-up rate of CCD.

Sub-millimeter sized multi-component jet fuel surrogate droplet combustion: Physicochemical preferential vaporization effects

Tanvir I. Farouk et al.

Summary: Isolated droplet burning behaviors of fuel mixtures with fully pre-vaporized combustion behaviors were numerically studied to investigate the effects of preferential vaporization. Three multi-component hydrocarbon mixtures were used for predictions, showing strong non-linear dependences on initial droplet diameter and ambient pressure for preferential vaporization effects.

Numerical study of multicomponent spray flame propagation

Varun Shastry et al.

Summary: A computational study was conducted to investigate the structure and propagation characteristics of one dimensional multicomponent laminar Jet-A/air spray flames. It was found that the preferential evaporation effect of multicomponent fuels has a direct impact on the flame structure and propagation speed.

A hybrid droplet vaporization-adaptive surrogate model using an optimized continuous thermodynamics distribution

Simcha L. Singer et al.

Summary: The use of surrogates in CFD simulations for liquid transportation fuels is necessary due to the complex composition of these fuels. Physical-chemical surrogates and a recent hybrid approach are compared in terms of accuracy and flexibility, with the hybrid approach showing potential for improving Eulerian-phase solvers.

Analysis of droplet evaporation in isotropic turbulence through droplet-resolved DNS

Michael S. Dodd et al.

Summary: This study conducted DNS of evaporation of n-heptane fuel droplets in forced homogeneous isotropic turbulence and carried out a parametric study. The results showed that increasing the liquid volume fraction of droplets decreases the evaporation rate and causes deviation from the classical law.
