Crowding, climate, and the case for social distancing among trees

Tucker J. Furniss et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers examined the interactions between fire, climate, forest spatial structure, and bark beetles using two longitudinal datasets. They found that prefire drought increased mortality risk, but advantageous local neighborhoods could offset these effects. Surprisingly, mortality risk was higher in crowded local neighborhoods that burned in wet years compared to sparse neighborhoods that burned during drought. These results provide insights into the complexities of disturbance dynamics and suggest the potential for managed fire and silvicultural strategies to offset climate effects and enhance resilience to fire, beetles, and drought.

Tree growth responses to extreme drought after mechanical thinning and prescribed fire in a Sierra Nevada mixed-conifer forest, USA

Harold S. J. Zald et al.

Summary: This study examined the growth responses of trees in the southern Sierra Nevada Range in California to thinning, prescribed burning, and extreme drought. The results showed that mechanical thinning improved the growth rate of residual trees, and this response persisted during a decade-long extreme drought. However, prescribed burning did not result in improved tree growth. Various tree-level attributes and environmental conditions also influenced the growth responses.

Variable thinning and prescribed fire influence tree mortality and growth during and after a severe drought

Summary: Research shows that thinning can reduce overall tree mortality in California's high density forests during extreme drought periods, and helps to enhance resilience to future drought and wildfires.

Do forest fuel reduction treatments confer resistance to beetle infestation and drought mortality?

Z. L. Steel et al.

Summary: This study in a mixed-conifer forest in California found that different tree species have varied mortality rates following fuel reduction treatments, and that tree growth rate and treatment type can impact mortality rates. Additionally, while mechanical thinning alone had neutral to reduced mortality rates, treatments including prescribed burning led to increased beetle infestation and mortality in certain tree species.

Mixed-conifer forest reference conditions for privately owned timberland in the southern Cascade Range

Brandon M. Collins et al.

Summary: The study utilized extensive timber survey data collected from privately owned forestland in the early 1920s to reconstruct historical forest conditions, which fit the classic model of frequent-fire forests. Despite relatively low variability in forest structure and composition across the historical landscape, the analyses revealed evidence of biophysical controls on tree density and pine fraction.

Forest Resistance to Extended Drought Enhanced by Prescribed Fire in Low Elevation Forests of the Sierra Nevada

Phillip J. van Mantgem et al.

Summary: Prescribed fire reduces fire hazards by removing dead and live fuels, while also potentially increasing trees' ability to survive drought. Studies show that reductions in forest density following prescribed fire treatments, combined with mechanical treatments, may help lessen competition and improve tree survival rates.
