Formulation, characterization and in vitro digestion of polysaccharide reinforced Ca-alginate microbeads encapsulating Citrus medica L. phenolics

Vikas Dadwal et al.

Summary: In this study, Citrus medica L. phenolics were encapsulated in Ca-alginate microbeads using ionotropic gelation technique with the addition of polysaccharide fillers for improved encapsulation and controlled release. Among the polymeric combinations tested, APE microbeads with pectin filler showed the highest encapsulation efficiency and antioxidant activity. The physical properties of the microbeads, as well as the chemical interactions and compounds encapsulated, were analyzed and compared.

Multiomics-based dissection of citrus flavonoid metabolism using a Citrus reticulata x Poncirus trifoliata population

Jiaolin Mou et al.

Summary: Deciphering the genetic basis of plant secondary metabolism, especially in citrus plants, can provide insights for genetic improvement and enhance our understanding of plant biological processes. By utilizing a high-density linkage map, researchers identified multiple quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for flavonoids in different tissues of a citrus population, shedding light on potential candidate genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis. Further functional verification of a gene encoding flavanone 3-hydroxylase (F3H) indicated its role in natural variation of dihydrokaempferol content, laying the groundwork for future studies on citrus flavonoid biosynthesis pathway.

Cytotoxicity of Moringa oleifera fruits on human liver cancer and molecular docking analysis of bioactive constituents against caspase-3 enzyme

Sahabjada Siddiqui et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the potential anticancer activity of Moringa oleifera fruit extract against human liver cancer cells by inducing apoptosis and activating caspase-3 enzyme. In silico analysis confirmed the good binding interaction between bioactive components of Moringa oleifera fruits and caspase-3 enzyme, showing drug-like candidates with no predicted toxicity. This suggests that Moringa oleifera fruit could serve as a valuable source for developing anticancer drugs against liver cancer.

A Multidimensional UHPLC-DAD-QTOF-IMS Gradient Approach for Qualitative and Quantitative Investigation of Citrus and Malus Fruit Phenolic Extracts and Edibles

Vikas Dadwal et al.

Summary: A simple, rapid, and reproducible method for detecting phenolics in citrus and apple fruits was developed using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector-quadrupole time-of-flight-ion mobility mass spectrometry (UHPLC-DAD-QTOF-IMS). The method was effective in quantifying major flavonoids and PMFs in Citrus extracts, as well as dihydroxychalcones in Malus fruit. This approach can be applied for quality assurance and development of food and phenolic extracts derived from Citrus and Malus fruits.
