Novel real-time PCR protocol for the detection of house cricket (Acheta domesticus) in feed

Cristiano Garino et al.

Summary: A new real-time PCR protocol has been developed for sensitive and reliable detection of house cricket in feeds, demonstrating high specificity and a low detection limit. The method's sensitivity was confirmed through various processing treatments, accurately detecting pasteurized and oven-dried house cricket. Testing showed that the system is suitable for practical application, able to detect house cricket down to 0.1% concentration, thereby minimizing the risk of intentional adulteration.

Collision energies on QTof and Orbitrap instruments: How to make proteomics measurements comparable?

Daniel Szabo et al.

Summary: This study compared QTof CID and Orbitrap HCD for proteomics workflows, finding that nearly identical MS/MS spectra can be achieved with proper collision energy adjustment. Orbitrap showed lower fraction of bimodal peptides and similar linear trend in optimal energies as a function of m/z compared to QTof, suggesting matching conditions for proteomics can be achieved with appropriate energy adjustment.

Allergenicity assessment of the edible cricket Acheta domesticus in terms of thermal and gastrointestinal processing and IgE cross-reactivity with shrimp

Laura De Marchi et al.

Summary: The study found that tropomyosin in Acheta domesticus elicited strong immune response in shrimp-allergic patients and had cross-reactivity with shrimp tropomyosin. Shrimp tropomyosin showed poor stability to gastric digestion, while cricket tropomyosin was resistant. The ingestion of A. domesticus proteins may pose risks to the Crustacean-allergic population.

Edible insects and food safety: allergy

J. C. Ribeiro et al.

Summary: Edible insects as a unique food source require extensive allergenic risk assessment, with crustacean allergic subjects and individuals co-sensitised to house dust mites identified as risk groups. Further research is needed to better understand the primary sensitising allergens and risks of cross-reactivity in allergic subjects consuming edible insects.

Future feed control - Tracing banned bovine material in insect meal

I Belghit et al.

Summary: The study showed that various molecular analysis methods can detect prohibited bovine material in insects reared for processed animal protein production, but each method has its limitations. A combination of complementary molecular analysis approaches is recommended for accurate detection of prohibited material in the feed chain. Additional efforts are needed to expand the available battery of detection approaches with mass spectrometry techniques and potentially delta C-13(AA) fingerprinting.

C. Rumbos et al.

Summary: This review compiles up-to-date information on the superworm, Zophobas morio, highlighting its potential as a valuable nutrient source for food and feed, especially in aquafeed and poultry feed. The data suggest that Z. morio is a promising insect-based protein source with untapped potential.

Protein extraction protocols for optimal proteome measurement and arginine kinase quantitation from cricket Acheta domesticus for food safety assessment

Utpal Bose et al.

Summary: The study explored the proteome of insect products using LC-MS/MS and identified potential allergens, particularly three proteoforms of arginine kinase. A targeted MS assay was developed to detect these allergens, showing variability in abundance/detectability based on extraction and processing methods.
